steering 2005 Z4

My 2005 Z4 has a steering issue, after sitting in storage all winter I started it and notice the steering was very hard to turn the wheel after start up. I drove it home and it seemed ok. However when I am driving now I noticed the steering gets very hard to turn the wheel over 30 mph and the car is all over the road. Then it goes away and is perfect. You can drive for days and then it starts too wander and the steering gets hard to turn for a few minutes. I rotated the tires from rear to front and it seemed ok but then my wife was driving it and said the steering was hard. I drove it and it was fine. Couple days later it happened to me, the car was all over the road and hard to turn the steering wheel and in a few minutes it was fine. Comes and goes. Any ideas? Only has 30K miles. Car 5.

The normal Z has electronic steering assistance and there have been numerous complaints about it such as the one your describing. The most common is when the car gets warm during the hot summer months and the steering is very erratic. Take it to a local Indy shop and last option dealer to have it diagnosed, I hope it does not need to be replaced because there is almost no repairs that can be done to it and its not cheap!

Good luck.

I know it sounds weird, but try disconnecting the negative battery cable in the trunk for an hour or so and then see if it gets better. As strange it sounds, it may just be a computer glitch.

Chris
Makes sense Chris because this all started after winter storage and a dead battery. Dealer replaced the steering column under policy.
