Someone backed into my car, out of my own driveway!!!

So Saturday afternoon I parked my car across the street from my driveway in it's usual spot. I do not see the car again until around 9:30am Sunday morning, and when I walk out, I see that my door has been destroyed!

After inspecting it for a bit, I am pretty sure the damage is isolated to the door, even the window still works!

I'm not sure if I should go through insurance or just pay to get it fixed. Any recommendations?

I also think I am going to get a new set of tires, and have a full inspection done, but it seems a little excessive.

Last time something happened to my car, my deductible was $1000.. I am guessing that it will be the same here? Im glad that the door still opens and window still works etc

EDIT:

You can see the driveway on the left

It looks like chuck norris spit on my car

is one of the only situations where having good photographical skills is not a plus!

Hope you get it all squared away, oh and concerning going through insurance depends on your deductible and total cost of repair.

Good luck and sorry to hear

Seriously, someone used your driveway to turnaround, trashed your door, left no note, and drove off? WTF?

This isn't what you want to hear , but I think you'll want to go with insurance if it looks like you need a new door. The door plus fittings is over 2K. Door alone is $797 from Realoem; $657 from Tisher. Tisher is cheaper, but remember the door is heavy and shipping charges add up. With other potential issues, labor, paint, and so forth I'd estimate this at between 3K and 4K. Unless it's a bad "ding" that can be pounded out I think insurance is going to be the best route.

This really sucks, I can't express my full contempt for the person who did this.

So shitty man. Like Finnegan said it won't be cheap; especially at a quality shop. Pay the insurance deductible and take it to the best place you can find. It should count as a comprehensive claim so your rates shouldn't go up.

That totally bites.

Like Finn and NMulax, have said, you want to have this properly repaired at the best shop around. I would be worried that getting this repaired myself at a low cost garage could result in a crappy, or poorly color-matched, paint job on the door. That would stand out like a sore thumb on a car like this. At the end of the day, the extra money you may pay by going through your insurance company is likely to be money well spent.

Good luck and here's to getting your car back soon in great shape.

Definitely go through your insurance. If you weren't driving then it won't risk raising your rates.

Man, that sucks! I would go through insurance, as getting a new door, + install of all of the parts, + paint, fitting, shipping, etc.. will run way over your deductible. Rates should not go up either, as you were not even there and parked outside your home.

The above is definitely not true! You may not be charged for the above since it will be coded as a not at fault accident but many companies have tiering factors based on policy ACTIVITY and as such could still affect your rates.

Your best bet is to consult your agent and make your decision accordingly.

Perhaps you're correct, but I've submitted probably 8 comp claims in the 20 years I've been driving and not once have my rates been affected. I was specifically told by my agent the last time ($7k for a full paint job on my keyed car) that my rates would not go up.

Make sure and take plenty of pictures and keep them. After you turn the loss into the insurance company, the damage will likely show up on a CarFax report as an accident. If you decide to sell your car, you don't want the prospective buyer to the think the whole left side of your car was scraped off! Is the damage to severe for PDR? I've seen some miracles worked lately that never would have been possible a few years back.

Check your local salvage yards for wrecked Z4s. That will be the cheapest option. If it still works then you can ride it out till something comes up.

That really sucks though. Good luck.

Hey Mike,

Typically comprehensive losses wouldn't affect your rates but many carriers consider "hit while parked" a not at fault accident.

Hard to tell if paint was removed ... I might think someone knee'd or kicked the door (comprehensive vs collision). I'd go for a new door and paint the entire side of the car. Black can be hard to match and you don't want it looking like a checkerboard.

I get that accidents happen, but to take off without leaving a note or anything... That is just below contempt. I'd be running anyone with a black mark on their rear bumper off of cliffs etc. The damage can be repaired, but the insult to my person, and the reminder that lowly people exist in the world is worse. Make sure you grind it out of the insurance, make sure that you have an agreement of your expectations before you sign off on anything. Insurance work up here is usually second rate, with no recourse when you aren't happy. Even shops will treat you better when you pay out of your own pocket, because their reputation and your business is at stake. Insurance work is guaranteed and they don't answer to you, only the insurance company whose only concern is the ink on the bill.
