z4M stock tranny

How much torque can it handle? I think ESS had a 650hp(unsure of torque) one running, but not for long

Hey Roffle -
....our beloved rides are 330 HP....stock.

....how many HP is too much??

Half-shafts?

U-joints?

Clutch?

Great question....if you sign up for the minimal ESS supercharger option - it's 100 HP!!!!

Officially it can't handle too much. The Z4M got the GS6-37BZ, which is basically the same transmission found in the 330i (both E46 and E90). When BMW introduced the N54, they gave the cars a beefed up transmission (GS6-53BZ) - so it would appear that BMW didn't feel comfortable using the original transmission with a 300 lb-ft engine. (The torque rating is correlated to the numbers immediately after the dash. The higher that number, the greater the torque rating.)

I'm sure the gearbox can handle quite a bit more torque with an upgraded clutch, but the amount of torque required to get 650hp might be pushing it. It might be worth considering swapping in either an S6S-420G from an E46 M3 or a GS6-53BZ from one of the N54 cars if you plan on pushing the torque envelope considerably. I believe the bellhousings are compatible in both cases (well the S6S-420G definitely would be since it's the same engine). Since the Z4 chassis is so similar to the E46, I'd be willing to bet the E46 M3 transmission would fit with minimal issue.

from my understanding, the e46m3 tranny didn't fit, which is why it wasn't used by bmw.

I'm just thinking out loud. Long term, it might be more productive to sell the s54, and bolt up an LS7 instead of paying the same money for a stage 2 supercharger kit, and only have 300rwtq
