Inspection II - M Version

Brought the Z4MR in for it's last 'free' scheduled maintenance, as the 48-month term comes to a close this week. Service department had the car for two days - SA called to inform me that the M cars require seven hours labor, which include a valve adjustment. Fine with me.

Picked up the car, list of services performed included micro filters, oil change, valve adjust, one headlamp replacement, etc. All no charge.

Engine runs noticeably smoother, more responsive, more power. Interesting how you don't notice the slow, gradual decline in performance over time. Valve adjustment makes a difference.

Ask for the records of the valve clearances and adjustments if they didn't provide them.

You sir are one of the lucky ones if you were able to get a dealer to do all of that work as regular maintenance work and they didn't not screw anything up.

I took mine in for the same maintenance, just before coming off of the BMW maintenance program, and I was told "Oh, we've seen so few S54s that actually need a valve shim change that we don't even check them any more".....

I didn't get mine. I had about 1500 miles to go before it needed scheduled. Now I'll go to a local indIe shop in the spring and have it done when the car comes out of hibernation.

I've got at least another 15k - maybe 20k - to go before I need Inspection 2 done. I'll also be taking mine to an indie. Several here in DFW that I can choose from and I have plenty of time to do my research before deciding which one to go with.

+1 Chances are the dealership didn't actually do the work.

How would one go about trying to prove that they actually didn't do the valve clearance work? I don't think they did it on mine either but it was invoiced for it on inspection 1.

Do the valve inspection yourself, video the results, show up at the dealer and start complaining.

Next time ask the dealer to provide you with a record of valve clearances and any shims replaced. A reputable shop should not resist/refuse such a request.
S54 Valve Adjustment Worksheet.pdf
BMW dealers are reimbursed by BMW NA for all Maintenance Program/warranty work they perform. Whether the work is actually performed is another question

WOW...typically how many normal service intervals are between Inspection1 and 2? I brought my car in for Inspection I at 26K and currently I am at 33K. I dont think I'll be hitting Inspection 2 for another 20K+ miles

If you're not hitting Inspection I by 22K, then you're not driving the car the way it should be.

Agreed. Unless he tracks that car pretty vigorously. I was a 2nd owner to my car and when I saw Inspection I was due at 26K, right then and there knew the previous owner must have not abused it much

I will have a look in the maintenance book of the car tomorrow.
