CNN article says BMW sells lemons as CPO

Did anyone happen to catch the recent expose news story saying that BMW is buying back lemons (I think the article focused on the 1's and the problems they were having with losing power) and then selling them as CPOs without fixing the problem.

I think it might have been ABC that actually did the expose, but I've now read articles on CNN, CNet and other websites. Has BMW responded to these claims?

I can't find the article on CNN anymore.

REALLY SKETCHY. A close friend of mine had several problems with his E92 335i... and we just thought he picked an unlucky car... but all this shows that BMW was extremely sketchy with the N54s... Thank God I went for my second S54 instead.

Thank you sir for the perfect segue for what I was about to say. Yeah, we will all be glad we chose the S54, that is until our cam gear bolts all shear off and we have massive, catastrophic engine failure.....

This is just the thing - sure, lots of N54s are affected by this fuel pump thing and it's serious and worthy of a recall months if not years ago, but it doesn't result in a destroyed engine, nor is it likely to result in a safety problem. What is really total BS from BMW is that just the possibility of a real problem with the S54 cam bolts is unlikely to be taken seriously. This is a major internal engine part that if it fails will result in a destroyed engine. And if it were to fail on the freeway, it definitely could result in loss of control and an accident. Major internal engine components should not fail due to structural defects - or whatever the cause may be with the cam gear bolts in the S54. You just don't hear of engines where something like cam gear bolts go bad in 20-50k miles. It's like saying, oh yeah, in engine so-and-so from company X, connecting rods will fail just under normal use and it could happen as early as 20k miles - it's ridiculous. Didn't BMW go through this with some other major internal component on the S54........oh, yeah, crank shaft bearings

Everyday I feel more likely to get an Aston Martin when my Z4M or my 3 Series go bad, Really starting to rethink how trust wordy BMW really is, What a Shame.

Just bought a CPO X5. Haven't even made the first payment yet. It's going into the shop Wednesday to have the blower motor replaced (CPO covered), the brakes checked (probably not CPO), some weird rattle fixed (probably not CPO), and a loose mirror fixed (might be CPO). It also has a bad windshield air leak, which definitely is not CPO covered.

Talk about buyer's remorse. Here's where we find out how well the dealer will stand behind a loyal customer. This X5 is the 5th car I bought from them in 7 years.

Should have bought a segue.

Now you've got me wondering if I've ever spelled it "segway"...

I agree about the cam bolts. If my car didn't have a warranty and I didn't have to drive hundreds of miles to get to an S54 mechanic that I trusted, I'd already have paid to have these replaced.

Other than the cost and the low volume of the Z4M, I wonder if the reason BMW hasn't issued a recall is because they don't trust their own techs to work on the engine.

That would be a good idea... hahaha! Let's see if they sell it as a CPO.

I never really thought of BMW being an extremely reliable car, but I also never thought of it being so unreliable as the media is portraying... and truth be told, I have no idea why I got the Z4MC... I just think the car is dropdead gorgeous. With all the issues that BMW have, and they do have quite a few... I just can't get away from it.

onebluemcm,
I just noticed you're in Richmond! I have't seen a Silbergrau MC around yet. I've seen Imola out near innsbrook, and another BSM in the fan. Do you service at Richmond BMW or BMW of Midlothian?

Yeah, wouldn't that be the icing on the cake..... As cynical, skeptical as I've become, I would hope that wouldn't be the case....

Lol, if its just HPFP issues, I could care less. Its an inconvenience, sure, but it will not be costing the next owner more money, and is not a catastrophic failure like the S54 is known to have (on a much smaller scale, of course).

My cam gear bolts went at 24477. Happend at low speeds thank god. But catastrophic engine failure. Took BMW 24 days to fix.

This dealership rarely lets me down. They said they'd cover the windshield reseal. On the one hand, they should cover it as it was clearly defective when I bought the car. But on the other hand, they don't have to cover it. Glad they decided to do the right thing.
