Seattle to Vegas
I'm driving from Seattle to Las Vegas and wondered of there is anything I should defintitely visit or avoid.
I've already driven the Oregan portion of HWY 101, so the plan is to go down I5 until Grants pass then cut across to Crescent city and start HWY 101. That would be day one! Day 2, drive to and explore avenue of the Giants. Then spend the next two days cruising along HWY 101 and cutting across to Bakersfield and then Vegas. I'm giving myself 4 days to drive down there and be in Vegas for lunchtime on the 4th day. I'll be in Vegas for a week and the wife will be flying down to meet me. Then we both drive back together, stopping for a few days at Yosimte and also Crater lake. I'm really llokiing forward to this and I wanted to know 1. If anything is a must 2. If there is anything to avoid 3. Areas that are saturated with state patrol 4. great driving road that can't be avoided Thanks and I'll post a few pics upon my return. |

Grants Pass to CC on hwy 199 is a blast if not busy, great BMW road! Might find a CHP near CC. From CC to Monterey is some of the best driving in CA, if not to busy. I used to always try and come through here early AM, V1 on. Big Sur? Nirvana! But pretty busy during the summer though. When I lived in WA and had my e39 M5 I made this drive a couple times a year visiting friends in San Diego. WA and OR seem to have lots of patrol coverage, not as heavy into NorCal usually.

I would head to the mountains from i-5 before or around sacramento. I-5 to bakersfield is going to be boring and I find the mountain roads to be more beautiful, more fun, and cooler weather.

On the way back I'd stick to 395. Go to Yosemite, but get back on 395 to Klamath Falls and from there to Crater Lake. 395 is a much nicer route than going from Yosemite to I5 to Crater Lake. 395 has some patrol activity but it's not heavy. And it's beautiful and not out of your mind boring like I5.
Diamond Lake resort is a decent stopover near Crater Lake. I was there 5 years ago and it was unchanged since my last visit in the mid 1970s. Clean, cheap, but very 70s. My wife and i enjoyed our stay. If you don't mind less than 5 star accommodations it's not a bad stopping point. From there you can find some nice routes home on back (driving) roads before saddling back up to I5 around Eugene (58) or Portland (26). |

Thanks for all the input guys. The car is all shiny and ready to go tomorrow morning. Although I haven't had a front plate on the car since I've owned it I thought that I'd better put one on the car as I was travelling so far. Still, no holes drilled in the bumper.

Looking Good!
I run the same setup for my front plate down here as I don't want to be hassled but also don't want to drill. Jealous! I love road tripping. Have fun, be safe. Update thread with any and all cool pics or stories!

I've finally had the chance to post some pics of this road trip. All I can say is that this was an epic journey. Almost 4000 miles with only 1 issue, my ipod interface. But that is another thread. Here are the pics:
Day 1. Start of journey, all clean and raring to go. Day 2. Giant Redwoods by Crescent City, CA (awesome drive through these). These things are huge! Short Vid (not the best) Day 2. Hwy 101 and Hwy 1 to just north of San Francisco Day 3. Hwy 101 and Hwy 1 through Carmel to Moro Bay Day 4. Hwy 1, 101, and 58 Moro bay to Las Vegas, via Bakersfield. Arrive in Vegas. View from room (right on the strip). The wife flew down to meet me and we had an all night session at Planet Hollywood, 6am. Red Rock Canyon and various drives Left Vegas and headed to Yosemite (can't remember what day!) Moved on to Crater Lake Journey home and all packed. Finally home Last edited by Dalecan; 08-14-2013 at 09:48 PM.. |

Amazing scenery! I'd do the same trip all over again.

Bimmian sells ///M stripes. They're designed for the flat, straight grille slats of the E30/E36/E46/E9x, but they also work on the weird "vanes" in the Z4 grille. I have them on my M Roadster.

Note that both routes take you through extremely remote, desolate, unpopulated areas, miles from any service, including cell service at points.

Just got into Monterey tonight, up from SoCal. Took Hwy.33 to Hwy. 58 to the 101 to the 1 up through Big Sur. Love Hwy. 58, definitely different and usually desolated. Hwy. 33 has great curves and was bikes, Lotus, and me today! If you can work Hwy. 243 and 78 in, that's a road trip!
