Its under the glove box, take off the panel (2-3 screws).

You'll see a metal box with some wires, instructions I had was to remove the cables connected to the metal box for better access to the filter casing beside it (I didnt disconnect the cables fearing throwing warning lights).

The filter casing is black, to open it, the bottom flap can be removed by sliding.

Take out the old filter and making note the way it came out so you know the wind direction.

Slide the new filter in, matching the wind direction, then put everything back togather.

Sorry it took so long to get back! Didn't see your question till today. I had changed the cabin filters on my 325i (very easy) and on my wife's CRV (more work than necessary) and wanted to be prepared for the distant day when my Z was off warranty!

Here is a pretty good reason.

probably due to the fact that it allows air into the cabin and also that it has a heater and an A/C unit as well.

air filter

The comment was made "tongue-in-cheek".

I usually have my A/C blowing full blast with the top down anyway.
Just seems like an added manufacturing expense in a convertible.

Pics are 800x600, I can lower it if necessary

Once you unscrew the 2 little screws below the glove compartment, you just pull that cover down. Once you unlatch the filter compartment, get your vaccum ready... mine was cover with leaves... pretty easy to switch out..

So my existing airflow points UP, I hope thats right, unless the last person/dealer installed it wrong..

Oh, you really don't understand.
If it's raining in Abilene (180mi away), the wife doesn't let it out of the garage.

Swapping out this cabin filter was one pain in the a$$. 30 minutes and I had to yell the thing back together! If you don't like lying on your back under a dash stay clear.

@LSTRATOS

Thank you for the perfect DIY. Followed your pictures and it worked as shown.

The worst part was the actual light...the cable on mine was so short...almost impossible to even lower the plastic plate even an inch or two.

Popped light out from underneath and then partially pushed through to get at the cable. then I could get at the rest. However I decided to remove the white box to get everything out of the way..making the job less challenging.

Thanks again.
