Testing eccentric shaft sensor?

Hello,

I am replacing the valve cover gasket on a 07 z coupe and I was wondering if there is a way to check the functionality of the eccentric shaft sensor?

The sensor connector didn't have oil in it, that's good news however not sure what would cause the sensor to fail? Anyone know how I can test it?

The engine rpm sometimes fluctuates little bit but it isn't wild. It hesitates little bit under acceleration, not sure if that's the sensor iteself or the traction control interfering.
