A lighted ZHP Knob? I didn't know that existed. If you can mod one to be lighted why in the hell aren't they manufactured with the light?

Used this DIY to install a ZHP knob in my Z4MC. Drove a fellow Z4MC owner's car with this knob and was shocked at the difference that I asked if he had a short shifter.

This is a great performance modification!

...and how long have you had this car? j/k...good call on the ZHP knob

I can't believed that it took me almost a year after ownership to swap in this ZHP knob...should have done it on day 1.

You can get them from leatherZ - $200 +/-

While it is a really cool item, I don't spend a lot of time looking down at it when I am having fun driving if you know what I mean. But I did put it on my wife's "If you cant figure out what to get your husband for Christmas List" Its been on there for 2 years now and I have not seen it under the tree yet.

Could have something to do with all those gifts they get us in between, wheels, M-bumpers, M-Steering Wheels, side skirts, paint, Hardtop, alarms, One touch modules, grilles, Mstaches, tools... OMG she was right, it really does just keep on going, Its my B-day everyday here. But at least they know where we are.

I suppose what this really means is there's stuff you/we want more! Hmm, what if you could get it for $100?

No, the ZHP knob I have is not lighted. Only the orignal knob is lighted.

Since scouring the net for some useful info on the install, I figured I'd try my hand at my own DIY post. Obviously, there are some steps that I probably didn't need to take, but I thought it was best to do it (just because I'm a cautious kinda guy, and because the Ms have a wiring harness underneath that the non-Ms don't). BTW, as with any DIY, I'm not responsible for any mess-ups you might incur while doing this... so do it at your own risk!

Original Knob (pardon the dust):

Pull up on the shift boot at one of 4 corners to release the boot:

This will expose the wiring for the original ///M lighted knob (note, non-Ms don't have the wires). Disconnect the harness (I used a couple of needle-nosed pliers):

Now, put it in gear (your choice of 2nd or 6th) and pull up on the knob. You'll need to use great effort, and be careful not to aim towards your mouth / eyes. It took me ~3-4 good tries to finally yank the sucker off (no injury either!)

Bare nekkid:

Here are the shifters side-by-side:

From here on, everything goes in reverse. Snap your shift-boot back into the console, then push in the new shifter. I was looking for a "snap" noise to ensure that the new knob was in, but it doesn't do that. Once I got her in, I just gave it a good smack down and then tried to pull up. It stayed in place.

End result:

Comparison with the original knob:

Have you looked closely under the tree this year? ................ or another year of no light shifting?

No, lighted shifter, but a nice new M hat with M driving gloves and the new 9500ix Escort and best of all a new Red Dawg Shirt to go with my Black one, now I really look like the "Joe Cool From the Motor Pool" .

Pictures to follow soon.

Thanks, will do. I'm assuming you're close to Savannah, short drive down for me. Santa was good to you Interesting you got a new Escort, I treated myself to a 8500ci, spent most of Christmas eve doing the install.............. totally stealth. I haven't taken any pics yet, but I'm hoping to take them tomorrow and post up the install

I guess its a relatively inexpensive modification but does it really make the difference in shifting - the knob itself is as one can see is shorter that stock but it doesn't seem to go down any further on the lever itself so all it looks like is it moves the boot up an inch or so. I have a carbon fibre knob with the shift pattern on it and its shorter but the total height is the same.

Yes, that is the un lighted verson, I got mine from Tishners, had it on sale for $55 and free shipping a while back. But $65 is about what you can expect either from dealer or LeatherZ or roadster solutions. You can send leatherz your shifter and he will take the guts out and install the light in the ZHP for you, it destroys the orignal shifter but it's the only way to get a lighted ZHP. He explains how hard it is to get the lighted emblem. I understand he does really good work.

@antenna - nope, further west, just north of Tallahassee at the line. I am talking South Georiga. We consider folks in Savannah Yankees. Just kidding.
