Just to clarify...Snell Foundation does testing to certify helmet that are in compliance with their standards. They most commonly rate helmets for motorcycle (M) or special application (SA), but have standards out for everything from bicycle helmets to horse riding helmets and karting helmets. SA20xx is a Snell specific rating - special application is the standard for auto racing helmets, and is what most clubs/tracks require. So for a helmet to be in "SA" compliance, it must be Snell rated.

There has been some musing that the Snell rating is overkill, but given the procedure for a helmet to be "DOT" rated, which consists of dropping the helmet from 10ft and measuring g-forces which cannot exceed 400g. Also - helmets are not submitted to the DOT and the majority of "DOT" rated helmets are not tested by the DOT, but rather by the manufacturer themselves. The DOT has the authority to pull random samples and test them.

So really, the only helmet anyone should be considering to use in a car is a Snell special application (SA) rated helmet. Snell rated helmets for other applications are not tested for auto racing.

Edit: the hack kinda beat me to it...didn't read the whole thread. +1 to what he posted

Hey guys, wanted to let you know that luckily everything went okay with the helmet and it fits very well. It also comes with extra padding which helps you to set the helmet exactly for your head. I didn't have any problem with the ventilation at all.

However I wanna urge that the Nexx is a motorcycle helmet, while it works for me very well for few track days, you should never use a motorcycle helmet if you competing in any kind of car racing! With that said thanks for all the help and input.

I prefer an open face helmet for autocrossing my airbag-equipped car for these reasons:

1) Easier for me to put on with my glasses

2) Good visibility

3) If you're an SCCA driver, you already know about this advisory from SCCA (http://scca-chicago.com/press_releas...agAdvisory.pdf)

SCCA Technical Services
Participant Bulletin
DATE: November 16, 2004
FROM: National Staff
TO: All Participants
SUBJECT: Airbag Advisory

It has been brought to the attention of SCCA Technical Services that the use
of full-face or closed-face helmets while driving vehicles with active airbag
restraint systems may result in injuries in the event of a crash that deploys
the airbag. Because of the location of the steering wheel relative to a
driver’s position, the airbag axis is on a level with the driver’s chin. In a
crash with airbag deployment, contact with the chin area of a full-face
helmet can be so powerful “that the risk of fractures to the jaw cannot be
ruled out“ (Hubert Gramling, FIA Institute, FT3/AF, 18.5.1999). This applies
to vehicle that may be used in Solo, RallyCross, High Performance Car
Control Clinics, etc.

Therefore, it is highly recommended that full-face helmets not be used in
vehicles with functional airbag systems. Potentially more restrictive language
is currently being considered for 2005, which could appear in an early 2005
issue of FasTrack. If you have any questions, please contact the SCCA at
(800) 770-2055.

Interesting info. To be fair, I had no issues with the open helmets they lend out for free

I'll hold off on a helmet for now

When the weather gets warm, you might change your mind when you stick your head in the sweaty loaner helmet of someone else who has just run. Reminds me to wipe down the inside of my helmet before it sits for the winter.

When you decide to purchase a helmet, monitor our region's For Sale section. Our local sponsors like JSCspeed have discounts - see thread.

Before making purchases, find out the safety requirements of your clubs. Safety equipment (helmets, belts, etc.) have production dates.

I recently got the G-Force Modified helmet: http://amzn.com/B0059J7IBQ

It's a hybrid of open and closed face. Good visibility of an open face with the added protection of closed face. I certainly don't want to bust my jaw.

just ordered a Nexx X60 air for the upcoming autocross season. VERY EXCITED! Hope it fits my big head, and looks as cool as it does in the pics. It has a lot of good reviews about its quality.

It's not on your list... and also a full-face design (hard to believe airbag vs. helmet is worse than airbag vs. face)... but I just picked up a Simpson Voyager SA2010.

I paid retail and ordered directly from Simpson ($299 shipped).

I love the fit. Like the weight (much lighter than my Arai motorcycle helmet). It circulates air pretty good, too.

I just need to find a find a helmet liner now. I shave my head, and it tends to tear up the inside of a helmet, butt-quick.

new helmet

I stepped into the deep end of the pool and bought a Stilo ST4F. I am amazed at the quality of this helmet over the Fulmar helmet I was using! Worth every dime!
