Catless headers and ESS software--Supersprint not allowed?

I actually had some Supersprint V2 stepped headers on order when I heard from Asbjorn @ ESS:

"You can not run SuperSprint stepped headers on the Z4M. There is a major primary O2 feedback issue with these and we have nothing but problems with people trying to do so. If you install these, then I am afraid we can not support you with any problems that may arise. We specifically list this in the product description on www.esstuning.com also. Use OEM Euro headers, these are the best IMO."

In a later reply:

"No, the Supersprint issue is not the secondary sensors but the primary. They do not get a good read of the exh flow due to the stepped design and you have all sorts of fuel trim deviation codes."

OEM Euro headers run $2,250 new and I've found them difficult to find used...and don't flow as well, either. Plus they require relocation of the secondary O2 and EGT sensors. ESS' website for the Z4M also broadly forbids Supersprint headers, without even singling out the stepped ones.

With my plans to install the VT2-500 soon, I'm eager to get the immense heat source out of the engine compartment. Any help on finding some good catless headers that ESS won't refuse to support?

I had the SS v1 stepped headers & could not solve the primary o2 sensor miss-reading problem no matter what we did. I replaced these with euro headers from Turner and problem solved. On top of the o2 issue the v1 stepped headers did not fit the car properly. We even ordered a second set just to be sure and ended up modifying one set to fit. I think the fitment problem was fixed with v2 but not so sure about what changed with the o2 situation. I'm really happy with the euro headers and I will post dyno results here at some point for comparison. With the SS stepped headers it saw 300hp at the wheels. The car runs much smoother now that the o2s are reading correctly.

z4mnyc, by euro headers, you mean the OEM ones--right? I couldn't find anything but Supersprint through Turner Motorsport:

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/BMW-...w-headers.aspx

Link me to the headers you ended up with; very interested! While I'm still open to OEM and may well go that route, an aftermarket part with a bit lower price and a bit better flow seems ideal so long as the O2 positioning allows a stellar read for the DME.

At the time I called Turner and ordered the OEM euro headers. I unfortunately don't have a link.

Have you seen the thread by Diokaef? Research Exhaust system? See here and post 5, apparently will be designed with ESS in mind. I believe this is in testing with some beta testers here on this forum (see end of thread).

Interesting, I hadn't...I'll keep an eye on it. However, I'd probably prefer something more proven, especially when it comes to a full exhaust where sound is so critical. Looking forward to some recordings of their setup.

Are there really no good header options aside from Supersprint and OEM euro?

i wouldnt worry about it being proven or not. This guy has put in a TON of work for the z4M community. that and the thread has been around for ever now. Read about his testing of the products hes producing and i think it will give you a more favorable view.

Apparently at this time the headers are still a few months out, and they are only testing section 1 & 2 + mufflers. I'll probably get around to header-back later this year, but headers are definitely the #1 priority, as my VT2-500 is officially on order as of today!

Garage List
When I ordered my kit from VACmotorsports, Cj put on the buy list a set of long tube Racing Dynamics headers and I haven't had any issues with them. I also had them hot jet 2000 coated, all for around $1000

Has anyone used the Active Autowerke Gen 4 headers with an ESS tune? Waiting on a response from ESS if they officially support it/get good primary O2 reads from the sensor positions they decided on.
