Poll: BOV vs BPV for supercharged, intercooled application (VT2-500)

Hey all,

Would you personally prefer the engaging noises that a blowoff valve produces, or prefer a more subtle set of noises and save every last cubic inch of charge air with a bypass valve?

you no my feelings on this iphone :-) i want every single piece of air blown back into the intake to get performance as quickly as possible, remember the s54 is working hard to make this Very large blower make boost, every inch of air will help, seems silly to dump valuable charge air just for the sake of sound.......?????

like i say great to have some new fire in the forum Re these engine kits!!

IMO, the BOV is just a bit too ricey. Evo, Scoob? Sure. Z4M? Nope. Just my very subjective 2 cents.

depends on what the stock valve sounds like. I'd like to hear SOMETHING, doesn't have to be loud though

Wow, thanks for the feedback guys!

- BOV too ricey for Z4M / distracts from S54: it really depends on the BOV. My Supra had a straight-out one that is a no-nonsense pressure release, but yes, people are fucking stupid to put whistles on their BOVs. Also, the engine and exhaust aren't producing many interesting sounds during a shift--the only time the BOV speaks up--so while I love the S54 I don't think more pressure release noise will affect that enjoyment.
- BPV produces enough noise: Thanks for the video, Beedub! The dyno part of it is a great example and reassures me about the BPV choice. Though, talk about ricey--not a huge fan of the sound of that car's exhaust on the track!

Your comments and votes convinced me to request reversing my order change with ESS back to the BPV. However, it could be too late--and TBH I don't think I would be that disappointed with a BOV, if that's what comes with the kit. I'll be sure to post plenty of videos of the sound because I think they are lacking on the web.

Last night, my kit was said to be slated to ship on Friday!!!

I would only use a BOV if no MAF is run. On my MR2, blowing off calculated air using stock MAF will lead to stalled engine
So I never bought a BOV to use. Instead, I upgraded to MAP setup (instead of MAF), and even then, I still kept it BPV.
Just getting rid of the MAF makes the sound a lot louder. I've never blown off before

Depends on the placement.
On my last s/c'ed car the BOV was before the MAF sensor so venting plumback or atmo caused no problems. MAF always read the correct amount of air.

SC > IC > BOV > MAF > TB

Yeah, my understanding is that the placement of the BOV in the ESS kit most certainly does not release metered air. There is absolutely no way ESS would offer the BOV as a no-cost kit option, covered by the standard warranty, if it could cause un-correctable A/F ratio problems.

Running a bov is not an issue to the running of the motor, we run alpha n management, so throttle position and air temp, its unmetred air.....
no doubt a bov sounds nice but the s/c makes such a different range of noises as you can hear by the dyno, blow offs, s/c makes a gearing down chatter noise, all very cool and naturally produced.....
