I don't notice anything and it is a lot cooler here. Doesn't sound like a temp issue to me personally.

Hey ZGirl, you ever find out what was causing that noise? I think I have the exact same problem. Started a few days ago, just after the temps around here cooled down. It sounds like air is either being sucked into or blown out of something. I've spent a few hours driving back and forth to work trying to figure out where it's coming from. I was searching for an answer when Lisa pointed me to this thread.
Here's what I know about my noise so far... It only happens when accelerating. As soon as I lift off the throttle, it goes away. I start to hear it at 2k rpm, and it just gets louder from there. It only happens under load. Revving the engine in neutral does not create the sound. It is not speed dependent. It happens at 10mph and 80mph. It sounds like it's coming from either the firewall area or just outside the drivers window. I was able to hear it today by brake torquing the engine. Could hear it at 1,800 rpm. Oh, and make sure the parking brake is on if you try this, otherwise the guy behind you at the red light will wonder why you are lighting up the rear tires. I have no CEL, and everything seems to be running just fine. Although I was playing around today while out at lunch, and the car spun up to redline in 1st while in SD, and instead of shifting into second, it just bounced off the limiter. Had to just back off and manually shift into second. Didn't sound real healthy. Anyway, if you have any info on your noise, I'd love to hear it. |

Agreed! This can not be normal. I know I didn't hear it for the last 4,000 miles, and now it's all I can focus on while driving...well, except when my dashboard rattles get my attention. I'm going to see if I can get the wife to help me locate the source of this tonight or tomorrow. If anyone finds the answer, please post up.

Hey Z, just came across this thread that sounds very similar to what we're hearing. A cracked hose seems to be the culprit, but I won't be able to take a look until tomorrow. Ghost Whistle

Part throttle whistle
I have this as well. It only occurs when the car is in motion i.e. some load on the car. When i part throttle the accelerator you here the whistle, it's like the intake is not hook-up properly to the throttle body.
Or as other i think mentioned there is a rip/tear somewhere. This will be difficult to diagnose because i think there needs to be some load on the car. It is very annoying. Found this thread. All roads lead to the areas in the intake elbow boot to the throttle body makes complete sense. http://www.x5world.com/x5-e53-forum/...-coming-5.html Last edited by EMP07; 03-13-2009 at 07:42 PM.. |
