Yeah, sometimes stuff gets stuck beneath the door so if you open the ashtray door a little and poke around in the crack (the one closest to the dash, not the one near you) maybe it will become dislodged and open without having to take apart your dash.

Mine would only open part way. I think all I did was play with it a bit, taking the tray out and gently forced it open which worked.

This happened to me as well. All I did was hit the sides of the ashtray and then it opened all the way. Hope this helps.

Apply slight downward pressure on the front lip/edge...all the while slightly banging the side of the console to loosen wedged debris.

If this doesn't work....you'll need to gain access within the interior somehow as with a stiff wire/unfolded paperclip and route around to dislodge item.

Did anyone ever have any luck getting their ashtray open? I really don't want to bust the lid in half but ive been at it with a paperclip for half an hour and its not opening. Did banging on the console work?

There are two "grooves" on the bottom of the ashtray. One is about a quarter inch wide and has a quarter laying in it. The other is shaped like a coin slot and has a penny and a nickel crammed in it. Should I just bust the lid off? Does anyone know if it can be installed without disassembling the dash? This is a real bummer not being able to even use the cigarette lighter to plug stuff in. I wonder how in the hell the people that designed such a fantastic car could fuck up an ashtray so bad.

To remove the assembly, simply remove the actual ash tray (small plastic piece that holds the ashes).

Once you remove that piece you'll see a phillips head screw. Remove it.

Now take your fingers, and keeping your thumbs on the aluminum/wood/whatever it is you have, take your fingers and put them in the ashtray assembly, still with your thumbs on the trim. With your fingers, push towards the back of the car and at the same time press up. Give it a good pull and the assembly should come loose.

I appreciate the tip, but I can't remove the actual ashtray because the lid won't open more than a quarter of an inch. If I could take the ashtray out I would be able to get to the coins

That stinks, sorry to hear that, I thought you may have been able to pop it open enough. I think your options are to break the piece to pry it open and order a replacement in that case... A new one is about $120.00

I actually have a spare part that is brand new, let me know and I can PM you a good price.

Ash tray lid jambed

I took my fine tipped air nozzle, wrapped some black tape around the tip so I didn't scratch the lid. Cranked up the pressure and blew the peejabbers out of cracks as I kept moving the lid back and forth. I could hear stuff moving around and after a couple of tries I got it open. Removed the ashtray and pulled the counsel up. Previous owner must have thought it a handy coin holder. Thanks for the cup off tea.
