I kept my garage opener in the passenger side cargo net, but whenever I'd be coming or going I'd have to reach way down to push the button. Plus the opener was very visible from the outside. I have a paranoia that somebody is going to grab my garage door opener and the DMV registration out of the glove box and have easy access to my house.
I thought about getting a programable mirror, but decided to cheap out and add a net for the drivers side. Luckily therere is an indentation in the shape of the tunel that is the perfect spot to place the net. Here's the RealOEM diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...11&hg=51&fg=95 I ordered the following parts from Tisher: 51477116156 cargo net 51472263062 clips Make sure you order 4 of the clips. I made a mistake and ordered only one (didn't update the qty) and got raped at the dealer for the other 3. The clips are tough plastic screwes that puncture the carpet and dig into the padding behind. It takes about 6 full turns to get them burried all the way and the hold really well. With the garage door opener I can still get the seat all the way forward with no interference, but nothing much thicker. (Sorry for the huge blurry cell phone pics) OEM Pass Side Drivers side seat back 90% Drivers side top view (fits in nook perfectly) Last edited by santov; 04-08-2011 at 05:58 PM.. Great idea! I think that I'll do that. I've keep my opener in the first aid box under the seat and its sometimes awkward to get it.

Ooops, just realized I had the same pic linked twice. I fixed the last pic so you could see top down. It's the perfect place since it fits below the thigh (note the position of the knee pad.

GDO placement
I too, was worried about my GDO being on the visor or in sight in my Z
and someone grabbing my insurance paper... I keep my insurance in my owners manual which I keep in my trunk. My smart hubby used double sided foam tape and put my GDO on the dash, just under the headlight button. Works great and is not in plain sight!

If you are willing to do a little more work you can have a permanent, 3 button homelink unit. About the hardest part of this is the mounting of the homlink unit. I used a 5 min epoxy for the unit and some 3M trim tape for the cover. All Pics come from DaveZ's thread - Thanks
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=226233 I did this and wired it to the cigarette lighter since it is right there. And if you are worried about cutting holes in a panel - dont be. This panel is under ten bucks to replace. PN 51459128397 Power & ground pics: Pull the ash tray, unscrew and remove screw and remove ash tray unit. The only real PITA is keeping the cover on and getting the push buttons to contact the homelink electronic switches. Attachment 511560 For the cover I used 3M trim tape. Google "3M Super Strength Molding Tape PN 03609". You can find it at Wal Mart Auto Zone and Amazon. To elongate the Push buttons I glued small pieces of wooden dowel (wooden Q-tips) to each of the buttons. Something plastic would probably be easier but it worked for me. You do need to grind down the ribs in the cover where the Homelink will mount but this is still too thick to get the pushbuttons to contact. In the link others have dealt with this issue by thinning out the cover. Looked like too much trial and error to me. Finally to program the Homelink unit use the pdf. homelinknr.pdf Little more work but you never lose this GDO, it never runs out of power, and it looks good. The only thing I dont like about it is you really cant see it unless you go looking for it - its such a clean install I wish it was visible. Last edited by BruceJ; 04-17-2011 at 09:39 AM.. |
