Low Coolant light/ expansion tank sensor?

Is there any way I can check if it is the expansion tank sensor causing the low coolant light on the dash? If I unplug it or close the circuit will the light be affected? I have a 2004 Z4 3.0, and found the sensor, but it looks all plastic, compared to original? Can I replace it without draining all coolant?

You should change the tank and the plate it mounts to. There's a float inside the tank that works the sensor.
