Just had my Inpection 1 performed.
Just received the car back from my local dealer, Checkered Flag BMW.
Excellent service. Mileage at inspection time was 21970. Since I arrived early, the paper work for the service performed was not ready. They will mail me the paperwork. They have done that before. My service adviser hand wrote an abbreviated shim report for me until the paperwork arrives. A total of seven shims were required for the valve adjustment. Cylinder 1: Intake - SAT, Exhaust - SAT Cylinder 2: Intake - SAT, Exhaust - SAT Cylinder 3: Intake - SAT, Exhaust - Two shims Cylinder 4: Intake - Two shims, Exhaust - One shim Cylinder 5: Intake - SAT, Exhaust - Two shims Cylinder 6: Intake - SAT, Exhaust - SAT |

My service manager gave me the 2007/2008 Service Maintenance Checklist that was filled out by the tech.
I think your dealer is misinformed.. or just an idiot.... |

Probably went to school with the guy that put 7 liters of oil in mine, then when I called him him on it he took out .5L. And yes I went home, drained the oil and put the proper amount of fresh 10w60.

If they're doing a valve adjustment anyways, has anyone w/ a M asked the dealer to check their VANOS bolts while they're doing work? If there's an issue and a valve adjustment is required post-bolt replacement, seems like a good time to take a peek. (yes, I'm up for Inspection soon...lol)

Got mine last fall with about 18,000 miles and now at 23,000 miles. The dash shows inspection due in 9,500 miles. I dont think i will get free Inspection 1 Services since the warranty and free service expires in August 2011. Oh well, i guess the car wasn't driven hard enough to have Inpsection 1 dues sooner!

lol...I realize that. If it were as easy as taking a peek, this would be an easier thing to keep an eye on and/or preventing. I figure I'd have to foot the bill for them to get at the VANOS since it's not part of the Inspection I checklist, but if there is an issue or if they're willing to swap in the new part (again, at my expense) since they'd have to make a valve adjustment anyways as part of Inspection I.....maybe it's a good time to get this done. That's all I was saying (or meant to say).

Which memories?? Are you asking if the Inspection/Service/Oil mileage?
If so, then no. That data is recorded in the same area as the normal car mileage, which are saved in the Instrument cluster and Lighting control module. On this line of thought but off topic, I learned from the service manager that if you replace either the lighting control module or instrument cluster, even with a the proper tools to synchronize them, the do not synchronize. The module with the GREATEST mileage is the number that is used. So of you replace one of those modules with a used one and it has a greater mileage number than your's, you get the higher number.... |

Thanks for the info! The car must have been babied by rhe previous owner. It had 18k when i got it. I put about 5k miles. My MPG is in the low 19 (50/50 of highway and city traffic) but the lifetime MPG is about 21.7.

Ship
The real question is do you notice anything different about how she runs? Different sounds, or anything? Or is it just the same? The line of BS (I think it's probably BS anyway) I got/am getting around here was that they stopped doing the shim checks on S54s because so few needed adjusting AND because the ones they have adjusted ran substantially worse afterwards.....sounds very sketchy to me. So how's she run?

The engine is smoother. Not noticeably. My wife can’t tell the difference but I can. It seems to me that the valve adjustment has made the engine smoother in the 2500-3500RPM band..
My service manager has sent me the paperwork. It details that two different shim part numbers were used, but I can’t determine what the thickness’s are from the part numbers. I was impressed with the condition they left my engine bay in. It was as clean as when I brought it in. I am very happy with what and how the dealership (Checkered Flag) has done on my car. This last Saturday, Checkered Flag sponsored a Cars & Coffee and I got to talk to the dealerships service manager for almost 45min. He remembered my car. We talked about valve adjustments. We talked about some of the things I have heard on the forums and some of my concerns. He talked about dumb dealerships. He was adamant that if your dealership tells you that a valve adjustment is not needed, then run as fast as you can somewhere else. He stated that he has four techs that really love to do that maintenance and he has 10 shim kits in stock….no need to order any shims. He also talked about hypersensitive owners, especially ones who own an S54 which is a noisy engine to begin with and along those lines we talked about the VANO’s. He is sensitive to this issue (he owns an E46 M3 and a M6) and is watching what is happening. He also said that if you take into context just how may motors are actually in service compared to the very small number of actual VANOs bolt failures, he can understand why BMW has ignored this, but as a M3 owner, it is a concern for him as well. |
