Engine ticking on passenger side - M Coupe

I noticed recently that there is a loud ticking from the passenger side of the engine bay. It is infrequent and I have not yet identified when it occurs. It could be during cold starts but have not confirmed.

I searched around on here but the only ticking threads I found were related to the 3.0, not the M.

Any ideas or is this normal?

Time-bomb.

The VANOS solenoid screw is loose.

With the cam bolt posts I have read, I would get it checked out post-haste.

Yes - a loud tick (click) was the symptom for my loose camshaft bolts. Dealer initially played dumb, then eventually found three loose/broken bolts total on both cams. The noise was most obvious at fast (cold) idle. Is this critical? Yes, a bolt ( or portion thereof) can drop into the motor or jam a valve. I suggest you wheel it into Center BMW and have shop foreman Dave Keisterman (sp?) listen to it. Remind him of the camshaft bolts he fixed two months ago for me.

Yikes Nikki! On the other hand, it's wonderful to have the forum as a resource for this kind of thing, and even better to have a local member who can refer you to a dealership and shop foreman with recent experience with this. That should really help things as it's been a real PITA for folks around here.

On another front, I hope I did not jinx you. For some reason I was thinking "hey, we haven't seen any camshaft bolt threads on the forum for awhile I wonder if all the issues have come and gone" last night while the Dodgers were destroying the Giants at home. (The mind tends to wander while your home team is getting out pitched! Simply an impressive showing by Kershaw. Then again, tonight is another night!)

Hmm interesting, I noticed it only a little today but the other day it was very loud. I am bringing the car into Center BMW this Saturday for an oil change so I will mention it and hopefully they'll be able to figure it out.

Do you know the production date on your M Nikki?

IIRC it was '06 & early production '07s that had the vanos bolt issue.
S54s at some point in '07 got the updated bolts.

Move the arrow on the red NA and see.
Is it the car or engine?

Hrm...well I tried to diagnose it today and here's what happened.

I started the car, cold start and no ticking. Drove about a half a mile and started to hear it faintly. Got to the fast food drive thru a minute later and as I was ordering the ticking was very prevalent. I heard it the whole time until I got my food, then drove away. But I didn't hear it much on my way back and then when I got to the garage there was no noise at all when I stopped.

That seems strange Nikki

FWIW
Going thru drive thru windows tends to magnify normal car sounds (window down, & next to wall)

Light ticking/tapping sound at idle is NORMAL for the S54. Loud ticking is not.

Kinda comforting to hear that, started my car up the other day and heard ticking/tapping, but now that im trying to remember it i dont know if i can deem it loud or not,

Nikki, can you try and start your car next time while recording the sound? I would like to hear yours to see if mine sounds similar

I did record it at the drive-thru but it wasn't audible inside the cabin on the recording so I planned on recording it with the hood up in the garage but it stopped. :/

I'll try next time I hear it.

Maybe u can meet up with another member to compare the sounds. From experience the s54 is pretty loud and makes all sorts of noises which are normal. My car ticks too
