The block has a two year warranty on it from BMW, if anything goes wrong again I should be reimbursed through the next go around. I can't remember the mileage on that warranty. The shop rebuilding it agreed to give me a years worth warranty on all of the work done. I'm hoping nothing comes up, but if it does, I will gladly tow it 400 miles to him

I tried to cover my bases.

Beedub I agree, but it's still tough to swallow. I've forgotten so much about this car over the last six months.

id recon thats a pretty good price for piece of mind, id recon if i add up all the bits and pieces, would come to more than that. So good on ya Shane, when all is said and done, you'll have a car with /your/ history, that you will know now inside and out, and something that you don't see everyday on the road. No brainer if you ask me.

Love it to bits.

Unfortunately hit a road bump with shipping (again). The oil cooler from ECS was a hoax for their shipping time I'm not sure why he didn't call and ask or this wasn't addressed over a week ago, but I'm stuck waiting for that to arrive for another 10 days marked from today (arriving from Germany shipped by BMW). It's absolutely mind boggling how many set backs have occurred in this.

This marks six months and 1 week that I have not had a vehicle.

I didn't think much of it when the shop ordered through ECS. They had the part in a warehouse (that's what they stated) so they would have gotten it to us a lot faster as it wouldn't have been coming from overseas. However, they didn't actually have hands on the part, so we ordered from BMW anyways. I learned yet another moral through this, although it's just hard to believe that they were that incompetent.

Hopefully this is the very last straw, it's been far too long and I'm cutting it close on how long I can survive financially without a vehicle heh.

SMALL UPDATE

The oil cooler came in sooner than expected... much sooner. It arrived on SATURDAY. Which is a little mind numbing. I left Austin, TX on Wednesday last week to be in Lubbock with my girl friend for Valentines day and to check with some employers here in Lubbock. I have made some progress on that front, but that's not what this thread is about.

They fired it up on Saturday and everything ran well for 40 minutes (stand alone in the shop all in the car). Although, there was one catch. The old shop had ripped my old DKF bolts to shreds, luckily I had another set on me. I figured they'd bolt the RPIs up with a spare bolt they had laying around, but instead they ran it without mufflers. I can only imagine how loud that would actually be. I'm a little sad I didn't have the chance to go film it. He sent me a short video, but the quality as it was sent over text is just awful... I figure it's not worth posting (the audio isn't much better than the video quality). I'll make sure to get some go pro action when I go down there to pick it up.

The RPIs are currently off the car, and he's continuing to test without mufflers, the bolts should arrive today, and all will be well. Last thing that hit the chopping block was a new battery, but that was on it's way out since the last time it was changed was maybe right as I purchased the car in 2013, and even then it had been sitting for a little while.

I believe everything is wrapping up, and pretty soon it'll be time to jump back into the ///M.

Considering the attention that this thread has brought around, I'll probably write something formally that embodies the experience of this entire endeavor not just the pitfalls and setbacks (don't worry I'll make sure to include you all as well, for those that have lent me invaluable advice). I figure people may actually like something like that, scary. Maybe y'all can help me come up with some titles or names for the new thread as this one comes to a close?

"A Rare Revival"? Or the cheesier "The M Phoenix"? Hit me with your suggestions

We've all been there at one point, believe me I have. lol

My mistake was brought on by modding a car to within a inch of its life (it died). You got there by doing the right thing and doing preventative maintenance and got screwed. You have a much tougher pill to swallow I'm afraid.

I appreciate the very kind words rplamb, it hasn't been easy making the choices and being without a vehicle. "If there's something difficult or challenging in front of you, then it must be worth doing" is the attitude that I've taken towards a lot of this.

Much like the movies and any other great endeavor one might go through, I've had incredible support from the people in my life. Namely, my girlfriend who's taken me in when I had no where else to go. She understood that I had always dreamed of going to sniper school and understood the great many challenges I was going through with my vehicle. I can't say that either one of us has been happy with the set backs we've gone through (referencing the Z here

), but it has strengthened us a couple and we are very happy to start our lives together, even if it is a little bit of "all over again", and of course with the Z.

Working on the logistics to pick it the Z up now, and that should be the end of this tale. And a long 400 mile drive back to Lubbock sometime next week

Hey Everyone,

I picked up the car on Thursday of last week and it was running alright, but it would hiccup and stutter every now and then. We attributed it to the new tune and though that we just didn't quite have everything just right with the Epic tune that was going on. We flashed it several times with stronger and weaker tunes, but nothing seemed to get all the sensors right and everything running as smoothly as we would have liked it.

The new clutch/flywheel has been great, the car feels so solid and it's stiff like crazy at the shift knob. It feels completely different, and in fact I almost stalled out trying to get it going out away from the shop! I was so happy to be back in my car and about to drive it home. I was scared about the tune and I was worried that it might take a long time to get the car inspected (which I had time as soon as I made it back to Lubbock, TX to do so and I probably needed to register it in the county that I live in now instead of my home town/county).

I start driving off, fill it up with some shell 93 just down the road and go off to try and meet someone for a short drive. I missed them just by a little while as I waited at the shop until 5:30PM to try to get everything resolved. I had originally shown up at 8:30AM because that was when my family could give me a lift over there. They told me the car would be done no later than noon, which obviously wasn't the case. Every time I thought we were just about to be done, I thought well it will be the perfect opportunity to get a drive in to grab a bite to eat as I hadn't even had breakfast. Well things didn't quite turn out that way, regardless I was patient and I worked with Randy at Epic throughout the day to develop a few different tunes to get everything working just right. The guys at the shop helped me throw the car on a tender for four different tunes and put up with me throughout the day, which was very generous of them.

Back to pulling away from the gas station, I drive across a few high ways, babying every bit of the car that I can. Just breaking everything in and getting it used to everything. The guys at the shop had put a few laps around the blocks in it, maybe a total of 4 miles on the new block/rebuild/setup. They said it felt strong and I was just thinking about how much I could push the car in the near future (400 miles down the road or so, pun intended). I miss the person I'm supposed to cruise with and I still haven't eaten anything, and I figure it's time to just head home and grab something to nibble on and then set up the GoPro and take the car for a spin with everything all tidied up.

I get going down the highway and things start sputtering and stuttering. The temperature looks fine, everything looks alright at the gauges. I'm still cruising down hill on a highway through traffic. Not the most favorable of conditions, but I'm just happy to be driving the car. The clutch and the shifter feel completely different and all I can do is focus on those to get everything down. Next thing I know I'm cruising down hill, and the car starts cutting out, misfiring, and finally... the engine shuts off. I try to restart the car twice while still rolling at 50 miles per hour or so, I get it to turn over once; then it promptly died. I found a turn lane as I was in the left lane expecting to go much further on this two lane highway which is split by a grass meridian. I stop at the beginning of the turn lane, turn on my blinkers and call the shop. They have no idea what's happened. I have no idea what's happened. I check for white smoke, sure enough it's there on the rear. I check the coolant, it's drained completely. I check for drips or leaks. Nothing. Everything was normal, then kaput.

I call a tow truck, the shop manager can't believe that this has just happened. I'm stranded on the side of the road again, only after a mere 9 miles of driving. A beautiful sounding 9 miles, but only 9 miles none-the-less. Tow truck shows up around 7:50PM and we haul it over to the shop. I still haven't eaten anything all day and I can only think about what's going to happen. I have to be back in Lubbock for my drill duty with the National Guard and I can't miss it. I have no vehicle, I start a new job on Monday and I have no transportation at this point. What is happening?

The shop owner is waiting at the shop for me and they try to turn it over after looking it over and wheeling it back into their shop space. They don't know what has happened and are wondering if the new flywheel stopped everything from spinning. He tells me there's nothing more that they can do and they have to get home, they would be in contact with me. They took care of the tow and I was stranded yet again.

The tow truck asks me if he can take me anywhere, just in total disbelief that he's heard this whole story as we drove over to the shop. He had no idea that this was not even close to the beginning of all my problems, and I didn't mean to tell him my life story, but even I couldn't believe everything that had happened. I told him that all my family was out of town and my sister was going to get out of class just up the road in about an hour. I was planning on just hanging out, he insisted that he'd drop me off at a bar or a wing place that's open until late. I told him that my sister was just up the road at the college and he insisted that he take me there instead. I got dropped off and he didn't charge me thing for the extra trouble. I gave him an amazing review and thanked him for all his troubles and told him he truly made my night.

So, we move forward. I've heard back from the shop and we've gone over everything that's gone wrong. The shop owner tells me that the old crank was bad, even after we had sent it off to a machine shop. We go through the motions and he can't believe that they didn't get all of the specifications down. I asked if there was a sheet that he could have requested for the measurements that the shop would have gotten, but they didn't seem to have anything on hand. Now we're looking at rebuilding the motor again.

The real breakdown
The crank was bad along with the rods that were sent to the machine shop. This caused Journal 3, Upper Journal 3, and the Main Journal all to fail.

-Motor overheated and scored the block, pistons, rods, crank and head.
-Shop has proposed that we move forward with a doner 2004 M3 with 60k miles and use the rods, crank and head from that vehicle.
-We will be using new pistons from BMW.
-Machine shop will hone the new block (that I purchased from BMW)
-New Bearings
-New Seals
-Valve Job
-Rework the Tolerances

Although the head on my vehicle is ok, he may still move forward with the other head as mine has now overheated twice, but under cold conditions. Either way, still an overheat I suppose.

This is all coming out of the shops pocket and they will be lending me an E90 3 Series in the mean time to use for work. The new job has been great though!

I highly doubt this is what y'all would have thought was going to be posted this time around huh?

This is one of the most disgusting, revolting stories I have ever read in years of reading nightmare stories on the internet. All of this happens because you tried to do the sensible thing and replace your bearings as maintenance. This is so sick.

I don't know what else to say except be sure to get whatever that shop promises you in writing immediately. We're talking real money here (I think you said over $16k?), and emotions get the best of everyone. What they said in the moment might be entirely different than what they tell you in a couple days, especially when they've had time to think about it and realization of the money hit comes.

Get it all in writing immediately.

He tells me there's nothing more that they can do and they have to get home, they would be in contact with me. They took care of the tow and I was stranded yet again. The tow truck asks me if he can take me anywhere, just in total disbelief that he's heard this whole story as we drove over to the shop. He had no idea that this was not even close to the beginning of all my problems, and I didn't mean to tell him my life story, but even I couldn't believe everything that had happened. I told him that all my family was out of town and my sister was going to get out of class just up the road in about an hour. I was planning on just hanging out, he insisted that he'd drop me off at a bar or a wing place that's open until late. I told him that my sister was just up the road at the college and he insisted that he take me there instead. I got dropped off and he didn't charge me thing for the extra trouble. I gave him an amazing review and thanked him for all his troubles and told him he truly made my night. So, we move forward. I've heard back from the shop and we've gone over everything that's gone wrong. The shop owner tells me that the old crank was bad, even after we had sent it off to a machine shop. We go through the motions and he can't believe that they didn't get all of the specifications down. I asked if there was a sheet that he could have requested for the measurements that the shop would have gotten, but they didn't seem to have anything on hand. Now we're looking at rebuilding the motor again. The real breakdown The crank was bad along with the rods that were sent to the machine shop. This caused Journal 3, Upper Journal 3, and the Main Journal all to fail. -Motor overheated and scored the block, pistons, rods, crank and head. -Shop has proposed that we move forward with a doner 2004 M3 with 60k miles and use the rods, crank and head from that vehicle. -We will be using new pistons from BMW. -Machine shop will hone the new block (that I purchased from BMW) -New Bearings -New Seals -Valve Job -Rework the Tolerances Although the head on my vehicle is ok, he may still move forward with the other head as mine has now overheated twice, but under cold conditions. Either way, still an overheat I suppose. This is all coming out of the shops pocket and they will be lending me an E90 3 Series in the mean time to use for work. The new job has been great though! I highly doubt this is what y'all would have thought was going to be posted this time around huh? __________________ ◙ Shane

All of this happens because you tried to do the sensible thing and replace your bearings as maintenance. This is so sick. I don't know what else to say except be sure to get whatever that shop promises you in writing immediately. We're talking real money here (I think you said over $16k?), and emotions get the best of everyone. What they said in the moment might be entirely different than what they tell you in a couple days, especially when they've had time to think about it and realization of the money hit comes. Get it all in writing immediately.
