Camtree G-51 camera mount
Tested this apparatus for shooting video at the track. Will use Race Render to overlay OBD info. It's designed to be used outside of the car as well but I'm not quite bold enough for that yet.
Canon 7D 10-22mm 24-70mm Camtree Test A - 24mm @ 1.6x - built-in mic I think I like 24mm the best. I think the rattling is from the lens rubbing on the bar. Will dampen it next time. Some shaking going on but these roads are pretty bad. Camtree Test B - 17mm @ 1.6x - external mic Oddly, the external mic doesn't sound as good.

What's your source for the OBD? My Traqmate/AiM Solo research a while back revealed that you can't get reliable data (e.g., RPM) via the OBD port on recent BMWs. I know one vendor spent a good bit of time trying to make the Solo work on E36/46 M3s with AiM's OBD connection, and failed. In addition, I found a number of forum posts from M3 guys wanting to feed RPM to their Traqmates, and they ultimately had to pick up the signal by splicing into the ECU. I recall that the RPM through the OBD looks accurate at idle, but not at higher RPM.
The OBD connection works on Porsches and other makes, but not on BMWs--unless someone has come up with a new solution...

Can't wait to see the overlaid video, should be excellent quality. Did you see the short sidebar article in this month's Roundel that mentions the film 24 Hours: One Team. One Target (Nurburgring 24) was filed entirely with an SLR camera?

that device is crazzzzyyy. how much?
i can imagine mounting it on the hood with like a 400mm lens attached. i have no idea what that would be useful for, but it would look hilarious. and you could probably make up all sort of entertaining explanations when people ask. |

lol. Zombie thread.
I sold this long ago. In hindsight, what do you need this setup for when there's go-pro? The flexibility of focal lengths is neat, but it's way overkill haha.

Gotta say my gopro captures better angle and still gets the job done. Plus overlay is a breeze since the gopro connects to my acquisition data app on my iphone
