Windshield replaced, remote keys don't work?

Had the windshield replaced by Safelite, but had to have it replaced with a different one a second time because the rain sensor wasn't working. With the second install, the rain sensor and the garage door opener worked, but my remote keys (all in good battery condition) failed to lock/open doors and trunk (whereas they did after the first install). Could this be a coincidence or something that happened during the second install? As far as I know, and as far as the very experienced Safelite techs say, the windshield install has nothing to do with the remote keys (no wires or sensors) functioning. Help.

EDIT
With a little further research, there are specific instruction on how to program the key. However, I'm not sure that that is the problem as neither of my keys work and they both were working yesterday. Maybe a fuse? Also, some have said that the receiver may be in the mirror...anyone know for sure? If so, the receiver may not have been hooked up correctly when the glass and mirror were reattached? Again, any suggestions other than going to the stealership?

I had it in my head the receiver for the remote was up there too, but I have no idea why I think that?!?!?

The receiver for the RKE system (Remote Keyless Entry) is in the mirror. So the issue is definitely related to the windshield.

Can you double check he plugged the harness back into the mirror?? I'm 99.99% sure he forgot to The mirror has a wiring harness with a plug at the end, located in the 'neck' of the mirror. The other end of the plug is contained in the plastic header where the dome lights are.

Shame on Safelite!

Chris

OK, the issue is the mirror may not have been hooked up correctly. But what about this: Both the garage door opener and the rain do work??? In other words, are all these functions tied together in one harness, or maybe there is a second connector for the key transponder?

Remote key problem solved

As I had narrowed down the problem to be either the key receiver in the mirror had not been hooked up correctly, or both keys needed reprogramming, I chose the latter before having Safelite come to the house to figure out a solution. BTW, Safelite had no idea why the keys weren't working. This is what did the trick, and interestingly it appears that key and other functions depend on which manufacturers' windshield is used. I say this because with the the first windshield install, the rain sensor didn't work, but the remote keys did. And with the second install to correct the rain sensor problem, the remote keys didn't work.

If you do not have a working remote

1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly
2. Remove key
3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.
4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds
5. Turn on ignition to finalise.

So having the windshield replaced made the car forget your keys?
That's kind of spooky.
Maybe the module was glitched when the sensor was disconnected and reconnected.
Or maybe it took a static hit while it was unplugged.

Actually, I think the keys are what they are, and it's the module in the car (GM5?) that remembers that they're good keys.
Confuses the crap out of me, too.

Hey, guys, what's so confusing? Key receiver is in the mirror. Mirror is attached to the rain sensor module. I think that when the windshield is replaced, the module may also be replaced and the mirror is hooked back into the module. This most likely caused a disconnect between the keys and the receiver, thus the need to easily (once this was the known possible solution) re-program the keys... It is interesting, however, to note that when the first windshield was installed, the keys worked, but the rain sensor didn't. Obviously, in this case, the reconnection of the mirror to the new module didn't disrupt the key-receiver communication. Bottom line implication is that when a module containing windshield is replaced, it is important to use the right manufacture's windshield in order to have module reliant functions work properly. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

I would have thought that only the glass would be replaced, the receiver transferred over, and the key info would be stored in nonvolatile memory in a module elsewhere in the car, connected to the receiver.

It appears that when sensors/recievers are involved, for things to work right, it is most important that the correct manufacturer's windshield be used...

I can tell you that when I had my windshield replaced with a BMW logo'd Pilkington windshield, none of the electronics was replaced and I did not experience any issues at all with keys.

the lesson here is never to let safelite touch your glass.

unless you have a high deductible on your comprehensive coverage, i don't know why you would even consider safelite. of course, the cost of lowering the deductible on comprehensive coverage is peanuts, so again...

FWIW, I had a less than satisfactory experience with Safelite.
