AST 4150 + Swift Springs installed
Installed the new AST 4150 (from E36 kit) + Swift Springs setup.
http://store.langracing.com/ast-4150...nsion-bmw-z4m/ Started with Hyperco 6" front springs + 5.5" rear springs but this setup can only get to stock ride height at the minimum perch settings. Thanks to langracing excellent support, we switched to 5" swift springs + helper springs in the front and 5" swift springs in the rear. Now the car can be set to have lower ride height than stock. I set it about 0.3" lower than stock. Front: With E46 Vorshlag camber plate + tunermotorsport front camber bolt kit (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-42...otorsport.aspx) , the car can get -4 camber at max setting. I set it to -3.5 and get 7.7 caster (over 1 degree more than stock). The AST 4150 top nuts are huge and limits the camber plate slide to just -2.5 (with turner front camber kit), to be able to slide the camber plate all the way (-4 camber), one needs to stack 3 reinforcement plates (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...08&hg=31&fg=10) on the front. Rear: max camber at -2.3 Started with 616lb and 728lb spring rate, 3 clicks away from maximum rebound. Ride is good and body control is excellent. |

I have read that the Z4M front strut is a shorten version of the E36 M3 struts. I believe some aftermarket coil over E36 M3 kit comes with shorten struts for lowering. The kit you have, is it from the E36 kit?
Thanks, |

Yes. It is from E36 Kit.
You are correct that by design the E36 M3 front strut body is longer than Z4M. Therefore when used in Z4M with lowered ride height, the suspension has reduced bump travel but has a lot of droop travel (this is the opposite of KW Clubsport where it has very little droop travel causing inside wheel lifting during tight cornering). In my setup, the bump travel is only 1.5". It is ok so far since the 616lb front spring is stiff and I have not experienced bottoming out the front yet. |

Thanks for the info. I am really tempting to try the GC setup I have from my E36 but I do worry about bottoming out the struts. The roads here in Toronto are not sports car friendly at all.

I had the same issue with limited camber with my 4100's, was able to dial in max camber of -2.8*

It has nothing to do with the strut. It is the cars geometry, and the only way to get more is with spacers or lower the car.

As I said before, I can get between 4-4.2 max camber by adding 3 reinforcement plates (function as spacer to allow the nut to sit lower), trimming the body hole slightly to clear room for the thread and adding the turner camber bolt). The KW clubsport provides 3.5 degree without using turner camber bolt but the caster is only 6.7 degree and the strut can't handle spring rate higher than 500lb. So it is a good beginner street/track coilover. |

I have one reinforcement plate as of now, I wonder if I should add 2 more like you. So far -2.8* has been ok on track but I think a little more camber would help with tire wear.
Stupid question -- in order to stack 3 plates on top of each other, did you have to trim the middle and bottom ones so they would sit flush with the ones above it? IIRC each plate has a slight lip which I'd imagine would put a gap between each plate. I had to trim the lip off the ones I'm using now just so the camber plate would fit underneath. No trimming of the plates required. They flushed when you stack them and they are cheap.
The extra camber definitely helps front tire wear especially R compound. |

By the way, can you take a pic of your shock tower? I'm going to try stacking 3 plates like you but not sure if I'll have enough threads left on the stud for the strut nut.

I rode in this car this weekend. Very nice! What he is forgetting to mention is the 275 square set-up he can now run! Has some of us now trying to decide which liquor store to rob to pay for new suspension and wheels...

Picked up this same setup through Lang Racing and am just done installing it! Am excited to test it out tomorrow and am hoping it's exactly what I wanted. Alignment and corner balance hopefully this next week.

Very very NICE!
Better ride than my stock suspension(even when it had some life left) and huge gain in performance! Lots of adjustment left to dial it in and still need to corner balance and check alignment. Lowered only about a quarter inch all around(may bring it down to about half inch total) and camber not maxed out. Braking is much improved and dip and squat are a thing of the past! Looking forward to getting some track time this next year! Sweet run up and over Palomar this am!

Definitely loving this setup!
1000+ mile visit the in-laws roadtrip and it passed the wife test just fine. Two clicks down from my initial settings and she was asleep while I was triple digit(Mexico....) Phenomenal dampening and control, even on the softer settings. Car really has some "flow" to it now and is much more confidence inspiring. Haven't had them fully cranked yet but you can feel the difference on every "click" and should be very sweet on track. Love the fact that we can upgrade them to DA in the future.

Did you ever experiment with stacked plates? From the pic of the exposed mount threads^, it looks like one more would fit but not much more.... Would it help to change the shaft nylock nut to a normal nut with a bit of locktite instead. (lower profile)
