Yeah thanks. Just found it on REALOEM. Not sure if that could be causing this.
It's not like it runs rough under throttle, it's that once the RPMs hit about 1,500 the whole system cuts out then catches itself around 800rpm. Going to the shop tonight. |

A faulty camshaft position sensor can act almost like a faulty crankshaft position sensor. If you had oil in the connector you circled in on the picture of the S54 it can give bad readings to the ECU thus causing this problem. Try cleaning it with some electric cleaner. |

It's the exhaust camshaft position sensor. The oil that got in that sensor probably came from a worn out o-ring. Part #17 in that Realoem link.

Well, my speed shop spent six hours today trying to diagnose the issue and couldn't figure it out. Following the BMW troubleshooting guide, it takes them to the throttle position actuator (I believe that is what they said). Before tackling the 5.5 hour replacement job, they want to rule out other possibilities. I encouraged them again to check the camshaft position sensors as I did when I dropped the car off yesterday, so that is what they will try and test tomorrow morning.

Quick update. Pulled the car out of storage and hesitation seems a little worse than before. Before tucking it away, these were all of the codes it would throw.

Now the interesting thing about that 2EA1 is it shouldn't even turn up in the S54. That's for an oil condition sensor something this car doesn't have. Two.of the codes I looked up has to do with gas tank ventilation or leaks. I guess that's either a bad gas cap, filler neck, or charcoal ventilation system. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=676625. I think there's a small pump that addresses ventilation. At least there is in the E46 3 series. See here. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...6&postcount=11 There are a couple of codes here for O2 sensors. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=432282 I didn't search through all of them but the links I provided, along with a general search, allow you to track down most of these. The car has an S54 from an e46 m3, which I believe has the condition sensor built in to the temp or level sensor.
The fuel codes are because one of the breather vents got worn through from the last owner running lowered suspension and wide wheels. I'll be fixing that shortly. Thanks for your help and links. |

The other codes, which are O2 related, would cause the issues you're describing--IIRC the ECU defaults to a rich setting when those fail. Chase those two areas down and hopefully that addresses your rough running issues. Were those codes pulled with a generic reader? I'm thinking "yes" as the codes listed are, I think, BMW specific/extended codes. A cheap knock off cable from eBay attached to a laptop is quite helpful if you don't have one--although with the tune maybe you do? |
