Risk of non cpo car
I found a beautiful 2007 Z4 MC from an auction house and am seriously considering getting it. Its got premium pkg and nav with just under 26k miles on it. I could prob get it for $30k. However, it isnt a cert pre-owned and its warranty will expire next year... I do a lot of driving for work too and this will be my dd so I need something that is reliable.
Will I regret not getting a cpo? What kind of costs could I be looking at at say 50k+ miles? Thanks for any input. |

price is fair if it's sans taxes and fees. i purchased my 06 with cpo about two months ago for the refurbishment, extended warranty and peace of mind, but do not think it worth the markup over a non-cpo.
has the vehicle been through inspection I? this is the first major servicing required and will be covered under the original 4-year, 50,000 mile warranty and maintenance package. inspection II should occur nearing the 50,000 mile mark and is the most comprehensive, and hence expensive, servicing. do a search on the forums for the various inspection I and II checklist items for the z4m. those will give u a good indicator of what to expect at 50k+ miles. |

Might want to get the VIN and run a Carfax AND check the VIN with a dealer. Just due diligence to make sure that you learn everything possible about the car history - what problems, what repairs, any accident damage, etc. Make sure the car is not a salvage title, etc.
I have had a number of BMW's - some in warranty, some out. Never had a lot of problems, but I generally prefer buying something that at least starts out in warranty - so you get chance to see how the car is going to be. |

Most of the reported problems with this model have been minor. Serious mechanical problems have been rare. There is a car that has been driven over 70K miles with no problems. There are a few specific things to check which you can educate yourself on by browsing the forums. You can also consider purchasing a third party used car warranty since this car will be less expensive than a CPO car from a dealer. The main concern is to avoid buying a car with undisclosed problems like previous collision repair. Often the biggest expense that people incur is the valve adjustment because it is several hours of labor, but it only has to be done about every 30K miles. A lot of the dealers charge for the valve adjustment at Service I but don't do it, so in reality many of the cars never get a valve adjustment until Service II.

Also note that Inspection 2 would not be covered under CPO. CPO covers things that break, not maintenance such as inspections, oil, brakes, wipers, etc...

Just a note of caution concerning BMW Warranties. I purchased a car with a BMW extended warranty to 100K miles or 2013 from a private party. I asked BMWUSA about the warranty prior to purchase and was told it would go with the car. I called BMWUSA within 5 days of purchasing the car and went over warranties and change of ownership with them. That was last year. I was speaking with BMWUSA this past week and was
told that I didn't have the extended warranty because I didn't go to the original selling dealer and have it transferred. I did a search on the net and found another fellow that was screwed in exactly the same manner so I suspect it corporate skulldugery that is behind this blantant rip off of customers. If you talk to BMWUSA ask for the notes from your conversation to be emailed to you or record the conversation. The funny part of all this is the way I drive the car, it won't be anywhere near the 100k mark when the warranty expires, and the car is running perfectly now. I don't burn one once of oil per 3000 miles and I highly doubt there will be issues down the road. |

well mine since now being out of new car warranty and using the cpo warranty It has now hit the 15000 doller worth of warranty claim...so technically you could say paying the extra bit to CPO it turned out to be a really good investment!

Personally, I wouldn't bother. If you've got the money to do all that, set it aside for a rainy day. If you never need it, you've kept your money; if you do need it, there it is. Horror stories like above ($15,000 in repairs) are pretty rare. |

Yes, please elaborate on the $15K in repairs. Did you have the head replaced due to lifter noise? This seems like a VERY unusual case as 3.0i's are pretty solid.

First, if you go forward with adding on any warranties, for your own sake, read all of the documentation and fine print - it is no joke that these things may sound great, but don't cover some of the more prevalent or expensive issues.
Second, check the price on the car - I don't know where you are geographically and that may affect things, but I picked up mine, still in warranty, with 18600 miles for $31k and this was from a private owner that had absolutely 100% full documentation on the car from purchase order on. To me, it was better than getting one from a lot any day since I was able to me the original owner and find out just how the car was taken care of. All I'm saying is for the mileage, you stated price might be high depending on your location.

I had that done on my 3.0si when I had it and I saw the parts detail. The head assembly that they use includes all valves, cams, etc. and I think the list price of that part alone costs about $6k. Throw all of the labor and other parts in and if you have that SB done, it would cost about $10k.

YEP! had the head replaced, the labor for that was over a day’s labor I think as it took them two days to get it done but then they had to replace the roof due to an issue with the linkage that screwed up the fabric outer and inner that a few thousand worth of parts then they replaced the auto trans pan as it was leaking, the pan alone was over 400 bucks plus labor, then they replaced the blue tooth module that died again not cheap to tear up. loaner car for three weeks, at 60 bucks a day normally, they gave me a new 5 series to drive around in which was real nice would have come to around 1200 bucks..... you can quickly see how quickly 15000 gets eaten up! man if I hadn’t had the extra coverage I would have been crying my eyes out. makes me a believer for the peace of mind it gets. other than that it’s been a wonderful car and I love it !!!!!!!! hey it’s a machine with thousands of moving parts something is gonna give at some point!!!! |

cpo warranty coverage is not exactly the clearest, but i'm aware that the most expensive components in the car won't be covered. it is nonetheless still a warranty that is good to have, but may or may not be worth the premium in price for. i'm still under original manufacturer's warranty, so can't comment on the cpo just yet.

basically from what I understood all electrical and power and drive train is covered all wearable items like hoses, brakes, clutch and fluids are not.
its actually allot better than the 3rd party coverage you find out there. and its bmw usa backed so they won’t leave you high and dry. plus depending on the dealer you get loaner car privileges and roadside assistance and well as other perks. my dealer only charged 1200 for cpo vs. non cpo so all dealers vary in what a cpo will cost you vs. non but at the end of the day getting an extra 2 years and 50+ thousand miles of worry free motoring is not to bad considering one trip to the dealer could cost you 1200 or more depending on what it is. not everybody will get their money’s worth but some will and then some its anybody’s guess but it being an M makes things much more expensive. |
