I've done it on the E46M. It's just getting to it that is a pain. I used a large flathead bit socket and an extension onto a ratchet. It came right off. I recommend just swapping out the o-ring.
http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0277.jpg http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=369406 Everyone should do this when swapping out headers because access without the headers makes this a 5 min job max. Last edited by Jumbosock; 08-18-2012 at 07:53 PM.. |

Thanks
Ordered a new o-ring. Doesn't look to bad. I have had the reinforcement plate off before.

Good luck finding the 42653 Craftsman bit guys. Looks like there is one(I bought the other) set on Ebay. Sucks to have to buy the other 2 bits in the set but that's all I could find. Sears sold out online. Found one at a Sears about 30 miles away but the inventory was off when I arrived. Ugh. Ordered full set for $15 off Ebay. Ill send mine out as a loaner when I'm done, if you come up dry. Or just keep it till someone else needs it. Community bit.

First off, DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT HAPPEN TO YOU OR YOUR VEHICLE. Now that's out if the way, let's proceed
Tools used: 1/2 breaker bar, long 3/8 ratchet, 8mm nutdriver, stubby screwdriver and a 42653 Craftsman screwdriver/socket screw tip. 16mm 1/2 socket and a 3/8 10mm socket. Rags, coffee can. Jack and jack stands Raise front of car and place on strands. The higher the better. A lift would be nice. Removed three 8mm nuts from the front plastic tray where it meets the reinforcement plate. Removed small shield over tranny(4ea-10mm bolts). Then removed the eight bolts holding the reinforcement plate shield broke loose bolts 1/2 breaker bar and a 16mm socket. Then I stuck my worklight up between the headers. If you look straight up in back side of engine and you will see a slotted nut. I used the screwdriver bit to break it loose and the stubby to remove. This is tight but it can be done. And I have some big hands. Took off old o-ring , put on new oring and reverse the procedure. These are supposed to be one time use bolts but i reused the old ones.Torque reinforcement bolts 59Nm Turn an additional 90º (with a tolerance of +/- 30º) ---->This does NOT mean an additional turn of 30 after the 90, it is just a tolerance range to prevent over tightening. You will loose a small amount of oil so have a coffee can ready. Plus check your oil level after repair. Google search has quite a few DIYs that are similar. I believe the shield on the e46 is slightly different This video is pretty good at describing location. I bought the new o-ring from here. Bought two just in case. These are improved o-rings. http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=369406

Just a drip every so often. Honestly it was a slow leak. I may have actually only saw three drips total in 3 months. But it was still leaking and I couldn't have that. If no leak its a good PM practice to go on and switch to the better o-ring IMHO. Of course this depends how comfortable you are with fixing something not yet broken.

Mousitch,
any way you can PM me the gentleman on m3forums and get his paypal/email for me? I am unable to PM him or post anything in "for sale" thread since I have a brand new account there. Thanks!

At what age or mileage are the stock O-rings starting to leak? I've got to remove the plate and do my motor mount bolts so I may as well do this too!
