pretty sure the OP is installing a supercharger, not a turbocharger

also, superchargers are "blowers" because they blow more air into the engine, turbochargers suck it out

What?! I hope you're joking here Wafflez..

Both superchargers AND turbos are referred to as "blowers," because they force air into the intake manifold (hence "forced induction"). More air + more fuel + proper tuning = more power. Neither of them suck anything..
Superchargers run off of the engine's crank (belt-driven), while turbochargers run off of the engine's exhaust gases (flow-driven).

Exactly. The drive system is the only thing that separates the two (of this type). I had been staring at the detailed pics of the ASA units themselves, so i said turbo. Semantics.
Blower, compressor, whatever... she's going to be a beast!

Really impressed, love all the water line routing...... your doing a really good job!!

keep the pics coming.... amazing quality......
I'll keep that in mind. I just thought about it we are not upgrading the oil cooler actually our weather is too hot in summer time I'll be careful about
this it's a really issue I have to keep it in mine while I'm running the force injection.

I dont think that I'll get a ventilated hood bcoz I didnt like any. BTW we bought RPI scoops to have some ventilation to the turbocharger area but it seems we couldnt install it due to the water pump I'll try to fix on if not we will sell the scoops.

Beebdub, yah it looks not perfect in the picture in fact that hose is a V shape. but I'll keep it in mind I'll check it while we make a run test

Definatly..... bear in mind my summer here is a max of 35 deg C, with the large front mount oil cooler it really keeps temps far more stable than the stock unit ever did, even when the car was stock, now with the forced induction it REALLY takes some weather and REALLY hard use to heat it up but it does get their, with your climate you'll notice this WILL 100% become an issue, as youve still got the stock unit inplace it will be really easy to get a stock uprated replacement that slots right in, probably one of the easiest jobs we can do..... i personally would like an alloy rad as well with silicone hosing...

edit: I didn't phrase things right about the turbo, but I do know how it works. And it might be a regional thing, but I've never heard of a turbo being called a "blower". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blower

Anyway, lets not ruin this thread with side conversation

NO AFAIK ASA blowers run a standard gear set, that's rotrex that has a sort of planetary variable gear. That quick spinup woosh thing is when the pulley clutch starts to grab and starts spinning the blower.

yeah my wording is wrong, i was wrong, they use a helical gearset which increases impellar speeds 1:15, i believe they spin up alot faster than my giant vortech does, CFM is alot lower however...... my main point is the "turbo" like sound these asa units make.

AFAIK, they have to be specified with the "clutch system" as an optional extra, looking at the gpower site the clutch is a payable option.

Always was a fan of the ESS CFR range, i really thought that was a solid kit tbh......

All the applications have clutches on them. You wont see an ASA blower on a BMW other then Gpower anymore. Gpower and ASA are one company and they don't sell to BMW tuners anymore.

All superchargers have internal step ups, they all spin at 100,000 + RPMs you would need a crank pulley bigger then the car and a tiny blower pulley to achieve those speed without an internal step up gearset.

Your vortech blower is designed with a much lower impeller speed, where as the ASA is a much higher. It's different theories of design, large impeller low speeds or small impellar high speeds. Each has their benefit and downside on providing better torque or HP, efficiency or fuel economy.

Did someone mention that Asa doesn't supply devices for BMW anymore? Why is that the case? I recall that in the early 2000s their kits were very popular with the e46 crowd. What happened?

Subscribed.

@O-cha: If the ASA blower has internal gearsets to achieve 100K RPMs, doesn't this mean that the ESS Vortech is more reliable in the long run?

Not really no as its designed to spin like this.... The vortech is a big unit and moves alot of air in a different way and even though it spins at half the rpm can move considerably more air and is very effiecient in doing so........
Each has advantages and dissadvantages, i like that my blower can make 750hp plus but i pay for that low down in the rev range...

Either wsy each option is sick and will give you mad power :-)

heres the bumpf from the the gpower site

G-POWER supercharger system SK I "Sporty Drive"
Basis: Z4 M, 343 hp (252 kW) increased to 450 hp (330 kW)/ 460 Nm
consisting of:

Belt Drive:
ultra stiff CNC shaped supercharger bracket system made from cast aluminium including an extended support-aggregate belt drive for the superchargerīs drive;

Air Intake Manifold:
racing air filter;
flow optimized clean air intake with large diameters made from cast aluminium;

Forced Induction/Intercooling:
ASA T1 518 supercharger with centrifugal clutch ASA K07 (optional);
supercharger lubrication through bypass from motor oil circuit;
air/water recuperator with front mount intercooler;
engine inlet manifold made from cast aluminium;
pneumatic, load-dependent boost regulation
boost level approx. 5,8 psi rel.;

Engine Modification:
6 racing spark plugs with modified heat values.

Fuel Management/Electronics:
adaptation of the software of the standard electronic engine control unite (BMW OBD remains fully preserved), enabling an unlimited top speed according to the capacity of the tyres;
6 x fuel injectors with enlarged mass flow.

interestly this blower needs nearly 6psi to make the power the ess unit does @ 4.5-5psi, this is where the flow characteristics come in for each blower, that big vortech can make upto 750hp with no mods just a pulley change, the ASA unit needs to be swapped out to the top units, this unit is maxed out by 550hp..... That said our Vortech units lack Tq, what our cars need imo..... This kit @ 450hp will gain significantly in TQ due to the nature of the asa units...... make no mistake, this will be a very fast car....

interestingly they tune with MAF in place.... i say it again the hardware looks fanatastic!!
look forward to seeing how the AFRs look on this....
I've been mistaken about the Supercharger unit actually the superchager we have is ASA T-521 and it's the same supercharger that G-Power use it for the E9X M3 SK I. ASA T-521 is maxed out by 580hp.

nice

I think 600hp crank is close to perfection on this chassis, so you wouldn't be far off maxed out at 580
