Looking to buy a 03-05 Z4....What problems to look for?
Hey Guys, I’m new to the forum here. Well not really, long time lurker, first time poster. I’m in the market for a 03-05 automatic or SMG Z4; either a 2.5 or 3.0, power doesn’t matter much since it’s going to be a weekend driver for the lady to cruise the mall, beach, etc... However I’ve heard of the horror stories with the 2.5 transmissions failing outside of warranty. I wanted to know what things/problems I should be looking for when checking out and test driving Z4’s. Any input would be great. Also any other recommendations out there? Thanks!

My '03 2.5i (only 40k miles) has been mostly problem free so far. Only major issue was conv top motor, replaced under warrantee.

Have I got the car for you! 2004 Z4 2.5 Blue with black top. Tan interior, 3.0 wheels. 12,500 miles. This is my wife's car which sits in our garage under a car cover. She drives it about twice a month, although I take it out once in a while because it's not good for BMW's to sit, they must be driven. The car has never had a service issue. The engine is so smooth it fells like an electric motor instead of gas. The dealer changed the oil before the 15K mark because of the "age". There's only one problem. I have to convince her to sell it-she loves the car. I've been trying to get her to agree to take my 750Li and I would buy an M6 convertible, so she could get her topless fix once in a while. So far no luck, but I'm still trying. One thing I can say is that she really hates my M Coupe. She says it's a "violent beast"

Take a look at the brakes (pads and rotors wear out fairly quick on these cars), roof mechanism (if it's a power top, put it up and down...it should be a smooth motion), rattles coming from the rear of the car (near where the top would be stored in the down position), and believe it or not, the gas gauge (Z3s also shared the same problem).
These cars have bulletproof engines and perform very well. To be honest, I'd go 3.0 if you can...after driving both, there's simply no comparison. The extra 30 some horsepower difference is more than noticeable. If you're interested, my car is for sale. Here's the thread: http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthre...38#post1866338 |

1. Buy from an enthusiast.
2. Make sure all service records are provided and current. 3. Buy from an enthusiast. 4. Stay away from SMG. 5. Buy from an enthusiast.
