AFE intake - help me understand

Can someone help me understand what the AFE intake does? (Vs. stock set up?)

How does it potentially increase horsepower?

And I've read claims that it can make the exhaust sound a bit manlier...how?

Is this something that a relatively non-techie guy can do on his own?

Thanks.

Questions answered in order.

1. Mostly just more sound and only a little. Carbon fiber intake would make more.

2.More air surface area in theory due to the ridges

3. I haven't read this. I would like to hear an explanation.

4. You can do this if you can turn on a computer.

It doesn't make the exhaust sound manlier, it just increases the overall engine noise coming from the engine in the front of the car, so it just makes the car louder in general, but it has nothing to do with the exhaust. Long story short, open air intakes like AFE and Gruppe M are supposed to let more air flow to the intake manifold, so in theory more air equals more power. Also, they eliminate any resonating chambers in the stock intake system which makes the car louder. In reality though little to no power is gained unless you do a tune and other modifications. Lots of other arguments as well like how it can mess up your MAF and lets more dirt particles in the engine than stock filter.

Not just sound manlier, it can make you more manly. This is true for all intake systems, and probably for exhaust systems as well. Every car I've owned that I've installed an intake and/or an exhaust system on (almost all of them) I find that year after year, I've had more hair appear on my body.

I now have hair growing on my back, in my ears, and in my nose. It does have a side effect though, the hair on my head has also receded slightly. Maybe I should stop installing intake and/or exhaust systems on my cars.

See. That is all the HP gains pushing the hairline back. The follicles on your head simply cannot overcome the tremendous G forces being imposed on them by a more free flowing intakes and exhaust. The hair is pushed in on the leading edges of your cranium, and forced out on the back of your torso.

This is the same concept behind not allowing your big breasted wife to ride with you. G forces affect fluids at a higher rate than hair follicles. So large breasted women will have their breast reduced by these tremendous G forces. However, if you have a small breasted significant other, and can convince her to ride backwards........

lol @ comments.

Unless it's a "true" CAI, most intakes that sit in the engine bay end up heat-soaking and gains usually end up in the negatives.
