Fin, Last week I installed the UUC (blacks) transmisison mounts w/cups. I have noticed a increase feel and better gear throws. Just a data point.. |

Ship, cool. Those are the new UUC polys right? In theory even Option I should offer more resistance to torque than neoprene versions even w/o the cups. How's the NVH?
Yes, Skelekitty and I will do a comparison of the Rogue (neoprene version) vs. the UUC red option II sans cups (isolated urethane) transmission mount bushings. (Might recruit e for effort for additional input as he's local and debating which to go with as well.) If the NVH with the reds is minimal maybe I can talk him into the reds with cups and we'll have a wide range of data points! My goal is to reduce the movement of the transmission as much as possible w/o going nuts due to NVH. For those of you with AS kit, can you describe the difference and note whether you have the upgraded transmission mounts as well (since those improve feel/precision as well)? On our cars, aside from the 3rd to 2nd denial with stock mounts, I haven't really had issues with finding the right gear with the stock shifter--and on SK's car the experience was the same as Ship's. Maybe I need to "test drive" a car with the SSK installed to feel the difference? I looked at the AS GB thread and Onebluecm's DIY thread and there seems to be some improvement (assuming the bushings are chamfered) however the install sounds like a royal PITA. I've got the UUC in mine as well, along with the ZHP knob, one of the best mods I could do, shifting feels great. Jut waiting to put my mounts in now to get rid of the 1-2 occasional grind and make things ab it more secure.

I don't think the mounts are going to help the grind. Most who have tried them haven't eliminated it; rather it adds precision and helps with the denial of 2nd from 3rd on hard lefts or under hard braking. The best "cure" for the 1st to 2nd grind is to pull down and hard to the left and to also pause a split-second between 1st and 2nd. I've gotten to the point where I can "sense" a grid by feeling a different vibration in the synchos going into second and find if I just pause and try to match revs a bit with my right foot I can avoid it. Like I said in post 3 ""Thou shalt not shift from 1st to 2nd with extreme haste, and thou shalt always pauseth and feel if the time hast come to pull into 2nd lest thou grind, and thou shalt pulleth to the left as thy hand shiftith...." haha that's great. I love the average driver's innocence to my car's transmission. Their "oh shit i broke your car" look when they inevitably grind 1-2 is priceless. |

UUC stage 1 mounts, no noise whatsoever, I believe those are the black ones. Works great... key to install is to not over torque them (easy to do since it compresses so easily).

do you guys feel like it's still rubbery if you do a semi-quick (normal speed for any other car) 1-2 shift with the tranny mounts?
I don't know exactly how to describe it, but it feel like 1st gear is held on to by rubber bands, and you have to fight against it for a split second to get into 2nd. I did the UUC w/o enforcer cups, and I don't know if this is still normal.

Autosolutions here, as many of you may know already from my write up.
I didn't think there was much of a 1-2 problem before the AS shifter. I came to my Z4M from and E46 M3, and for me the Z4M shifter was an improvement. As installed, the AS shifter takes the driving experience to a new level, IMO. People get "increased tightness" or "resistance" with the AS kit because of a minor detail with the supplied bushings. With the bushings corrected (thank the Lord I noticed this before the install), it's as precise as you can get in this car and still quite smooth. I have no other upgrades to engine or trans suspension and I really don't get much hesitation from one gear to the next, but maybe I need to pay more attention to it. BTW, the AS kit's main goal for the Z4M is to increase precision and feel of the shifter with shortening the shifter height or throw being secondary. In the M3, the AS kit can be had with as much as 40% reduction in throw. This kit in the Z4M reduced throw a bit but it essentially feels like stock. For me, exactly what I wanted. It's not a little "flippable" shifter in this trans, you have to deliberately put it where you want it and the AS kit is very good for this trans. I also decided on the AS shifter because it is virtually hands down the best shifter for the E46 M3 and has been known as such for several years now. The reputation of the build quality and improvement in shifting over the years on that chassis meant something to me. Was it worth the effort to install? Absolutely yes, as much as it sucked I'd definitely do it again. I might not have had to take down the x-pipe - one unknown to me was whether of not you can get section 1 of the exhaust down by itself. If you don't have to take the x-pipe down, it's a lot less work. I still don't know the answer to this..... If you have a desire to improve on the shifter, I'd definitely be contacting Ronald @ Autosolutions to see if there are any over produced ones left.

Link to the write up of SSK install, which is excellent btw, one of the nicest write ups I've seen (very insightful noticing the bushing problem, thanks for writing it and taking all those pictures). Now I just need you to correct your Satins (the material as in satin sheets) to Satans (big red guy) haha

I'm using the UUC SSK + ZHP shifter, waiting for them to ship the DSSR (pre-ordered). Using the orange Vorshlag transmission mounts.

hey, thanks guys. great responses...didn't think this would start quite a volume of conversation!
I had the same 1-2 grind issue with the stock shifter in my 3-series....getting the UUC Evo3 cured it, and made the throws short and deliberate. I would hope for the same result in the Z4M...and I agree it seems all BMW trans do not like to be rushed with "extreme haste". |

Looks like we need to start a new thread.... Finn gets his transmission mounts (UUC red) installed on the morrow.
