Anyone try Smart Top

Im looking into buying a smart top module for my 2006 Z4M. Has anybody had any luck with them. For those of you who don't know what they are, you basically can retract and close your convertible top with your key or push the button once and let go while driving less than 35mph. EAS has them but listed as NOT plug and play. The tech department still hasn't got back to me on what isn't plug n play. Any thoughts

Go to search and put in Smarttop and also look for Gaptech.

Does the same thing and is relatively inexpensive. Supposedly he has excellent service.

You might be looking at some old instructions. Here's a pic of the PnP harness included with the SmartTop:

Unlike the Gaptech, the SmartTop is fully Plug and Play. We're also the distributor for SmartTop in the US, with the full lineup always in stock. Along with be fully Plug and Play (no splicing or wire repining) with the included harness, the Z4 get a special feature by showing configuration status on the radio display, which is seen about 1:03 in the video below:

Here's a link to the instructions:

http://www.mods4cars.com/sms/db/smar..._v2_pnp/en.php

Let me know if you have any questions on the modules (or when ready to order one) and I'll be happy to help.

This was a must have for me before getting my Z4 but after realising there are some times when if the roof went down all on its own it might be bad. For example being a stupid moron I left a bottle on the roof once and then lowered it, but thankfully it stopped. Maybe I need more practice not being so damned stupid.

I LOVE my SmartTOP controller! It has made using the top way easier. I got mine on eBay for a slightly better price than I had seen around, but this was also a few years ago so I don't know how they're pricing now.

The ONLY downside I have noticed is that if I hit the unlock button a 2nd time before the lights stop flashing, the windows go down. I haven't seen an option for this anywhere in the car or hooked up to a computer, and it's possible it has been written out of the current code, but it isn't that big of a deal either.

i recently installed the Smarttop module for my 2003 3.0i and couldn't be happier because it allowed for 1 touch operation and gave me the option to lift/drop the top when car is in motion (weather here can change pretty quickly):

Instructions were clear and I only had issues getting enough cable slack from the stock wiring to pull out the BMW roof module:

One of the essential mods for the Z4 I feel!

Smart Top module installed in my 2003 pretty much just after they were released. Has worked flawlessly since I've had it. Can't go wrong.

Any of you guys have the problem with the soft top slamming down right before it closes? Mine has this which has made me hold off getting it. I stop the roof just before it closes and then do it slowly to avoid causing damage.

Quite a few of us have this problem. There is a fix for it, and I have that fix in a box, but it's a bit of an aggravation to install. It's basically some elastic straps that get mounted to the roof hardware. So, I've been content to just reach up and guide the roof down with one hand for the last few inches.

Same here. I chose to keep putting my hand up to catch it over fixing it.

How is smarttop going? I'm planning to install on my 2014 F33.
Just wondering if there have been any long term issues?

I don't remember seeing this thread when it was originally posted, but I'm pretty sure that I installed my SmartTop within the first year after I bought my '06 M Roadster in July 2012. It still works great, although sometimes the windows going up or down is wonky, doing the opposite of what it should be doing or not at all. I find that's just a small aggravation and overall it's well worth the money.

Hi All, I managed to buy a smart top unit from UK and deliver to Australia. It was very easy to install (plug and play) and has been the best addition I've made to my F33.
