Soft Top Problem

Been searching forever and I can't get a straightforward answer.

My soft top was working absolutely fine a week ago and today I wanted to put the top down because it was nice out.

Windows go down. Top unlocks. Pops out of the windshield but the motor just buzzes and won't go anywhere.

If I manually put it down it'll rest in its usual spot but once again if I want it back up the motor just buzzes and I have to manually pull it up bring it to the windshield and let it lock itself.

I've heard it could be a switch, motor problems, hydraulic fluid leak, or a clog. But nothing concrete.

Hopefully someone can guide me?

Although I hope I'm wrong, it sounds like your hydraulic top motor may have failed. The typical fix is to install a new one (there are threads here on that).

However, you should check the little knobs in the trunk next to the trunk hinges. You use these to lift up the top of the roof storage panel (its the one behind the seats that you see through the back window) to give you more cargo space in the trunk. As doing that moves the panel up into the space that a lowered roof would occupy, each knob includes a switch that disables the roof opening process. So, you should flip these knobs to ensure the panel is at the lowest possible position.

I hope that fixes this for you!

Eeeeek. Hope this works. Will let you know. I'll be off in about an hour or so and I'll fiddle around and see if this helps.

Sadly it's probably not this. If it was the light would blink and the top wouldn't unlock or do anything.

OP, might be the top motor, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There's a great thread on here by shipkiller on how to do a DIY replacement. Good luck.

Issue resolved.

Still pissed because I didn't get to enjoy the weather. But I'm more than happy to know my top still works.

All I can say about my car now is that the devil himself has possessed this car.

I twisted those knobs a couple times and just manually opened and closed the top a few times and it decided it wanted to work after I had gotten home.

Go to Shipkillers website and read the info on the top/motor. Lots of good information on all sorts of things that you would want to/need to know..... www.shipkiller.com

Those knobs on the shelf lock/unlock the shelf so it can rise to provide more stowage space when the top is up. If the shelf isn't fully lowered and knobs/switches aren't properly made.... Top isn't going to retract under power.

excellent news!!!,

I was worried that your top motor had chucked it in as did Beta, but it seems that you may simply have had one of those trunk toggle switches not quite properly in position. The flick back and forth may have fixed it. Let's hope that the problem is now cured!

Me too! Dodged a bullet.

But I really doubt it was those knobs. Because they were down before. I think the car thought the top was in a certain position and just got stuck, I guess it just clicked back in place after I manually put them up and down.

Hopefully this problem wont return...

While you were in the trunk did you touch or bump the red fluid release knob thing that releases the hydrolic fluid off the pump? I used the release once to put the top down with no power in the car and had to fiddle with it to get it to reset or seat and operate the top again.

I tried to pull it but it didn't really move. Maybe I wasn't pulling hard enough but I really don't think that had anything to do with it in the first place. Just a glitch I guess.

Glad it's not a motor replacement!
