Z4 M Brakes squealing

Just got a 2007 Z4 M. Brakes squeal at slow speed. Drives me batty.

I did the imprint procedure outlined on these fora. Still squeal. Brakes are original to the car (10,000 miles) with very little wear.

Any idears?

Thanks,

Tom

Probably rust. If it sits for a while, then rust can form on the rotors.

Give it a few hard stops from a good speed and that should take the rust off.

Hmmm, I would think that 10 hard stops from 70 to 10, one right after the other would take care of any rust. The rotors were glowing. They still squealed. Even during long trips with lots of braking. I drive the car all the time. None of my other cars squeal.

That is odd. Wonder if the PO put different pads on? The stock pads were silent in my car. The Hawk ceramics I have now make a grinding sound, but still have no squeal. Maybe try a new set of stock pads?

Two thoughts:

The previous owner put non-OE pads on it. If they're track-type pads, they'll squeal and there's nothing you can do except put street pads back on it.

Most likely, you just need to put anti-squeal compound on the back of the pads, lube the caliper guide pins and make sure the anti-rattle clips are installed. Find a BMW brake DIY --they're all pretty much the same--and you can do it all yourself very easily. Other than removing the wheel, it's the equivalent of two bolts per corner.

Good luck
