vibration

Hi

I have a 2007 Z4MC which has covered 13,000 miles. Over the past 3 to 4 thousand miles the engine/exhaust has become really rough;
- vibration through the steering wheel and pedals at idle
- resonance point at 1,000rpm where the cup holders dance and cars in the rear view mirror become a blur
- resonance point at 3,000rpm
- great fund to drive but I will soon need ear defenders

The car has just been in for the first oil change (it had it's 1,200 change on time) and the dealer said 'they all do that', 'it's parts of the cars's character'. My previous car was an E46 M3 and the Z4 is a completely different experience in terms of noise and harshness. Does this sound typical of a Z4MC?

Thanks for your help

Get your engine mount bracket and bolts checked. It's a common problem for the Z4M and there's a service bulletin out there. The issues you described you're having now fit the symptons of loose/broken engine mount bracket bolts. The engine might dip down to the right which might knock the exhaust pipes out of their original positions.

My Z4MR didn't have those symptons, but I took the car in to have it checked for pre-caution, and fair enough the dealer found loose bolts, and replaced the bolts and the right mount brakcet.

What model year is your car? If it's a 2007, then there's an extremely good chance this is it. Note though that a 3,000RPM "resonance" is somewhat normal (depending on degree) as that is the point at which the VANOS engagement is most noticable...

Passenger side engine mounts... prolly the problem. I had the same thing as well till it was fixed, then all was quiet again.

Mine's an '06, built in April.

Hi

Thank you for the suggestions, more than the dealer could think of. The car is booked in for Monday next week. Let's see what they find.

Fixed !!!

It feels like I have a car rather than a old truck. Two engine bolts were broken and the exhaust was rubbing on the underside of the car.

Two visits to different BMW dealers and they thought there was nothing wrong with the car. One quick post here and I get expert advice. On the third visit to a BMW dealer they fix it. I left a printout of the Technical Service sheet in the car. Even with that (which they said they read) the BMW dealer said it took them 2 hours to find the fault.

Thank you for your help.
