M Coupe vs Porsche 997 Carrera

I raced a face lifted version the other night and it kept up really well, actually we were neck and neck. I raced the pre facelifted version and dropped it every time meaning the power upgrade on this new version spot on.

Is the ///M Coupe BMWs answer to the Porsche 911 Carrera?

Has anyone done an objective comparison between these two cars in regards to handling, power, comfort and not price as there is a price difference?

Engine:
M Coupe 252kw & 365NM
Carrera 239kw & 370NM

Mass:
M coupe 1400 kg
Carrera 1395 kg

Here are the performance times:

Nordschleife 8:15 8:15
Hockenheim Short 1:16.7 1:16.9
Autozeitung test track 1:42.8 1:40.8

The v1 997S has 355 hp and is fairly light. Are you saying your M Coupe stayed with a 997S? Was it a 6 speed manual?

My personal experience on a track with the local P-Car club is that, with sticky tires, an aggressive alignment, and better brake pads and fluid, the only Porsches that could sufficiently handle me were the Turbos, GT2s, and GT3s.

My girlfriend's 997-1 C4S is, unfortunately, an automatic, and the only way to get it to approach "feeling" like my M Coupe is to put the 997s sport on and set the shocks to full stiff. Otherwise the throttle is lame and rides like a buick...

US Z4 M's are speed limited to 270 km/h in 6th gear. No speed limits in the other gears. This weekend I plan to see how fast 5th is!

the Z looks much better, performance is about the same based on the numbers you gave. I'll take an M coupe over a Porsche any day

If you're going to get a 997, might as well step up and get at least a 997S or C4S. 997 base is really a wife's car.

What the heck?

Sorry but a base 997 with manual gearbox is still one of the best drivers car in the world.

It's anything but a ''wife' car''.

Have you ever driven one?

Plenty of them. I used to own a 996 GT3, 996Turbo & 997S (before my wife and I got a baby and I was forced to grow up myself) and have test-driven base 997, 997GT3, 997 Turbo, 997 GT3-RS. I've pretty much driven them all. And by test-drive I don't mean a 20 minute drive along the block. The dealer always lets me have the car for at least an entire day, if not over the weekend.

If you're going to spend that kind of money to get a 997 already, what's a few more dollars to get the 997S?

$11,000 ≠ a few dollars...

Maybe if you're in Carerra GT/Merc SLR territory, but these are sub $100K cars here.

I could see calling a purple automatic convertible 997 a "wife's car", but as stated above, a manual, base 2wd 997 coupe is anything but.

If you can afford a $75k~$80k car IN CASH, $10K is probably only a couple more months (or less) of earnings. If you finance and are paying $1500 per month on a car payment, what's another $200?

I stand by my statement that if you're already spending that kind of money on a car, step up and go for at least a 997S.

If you want to be seen driving a Porsche 911 and want to be able to say you drive a Porsche 911, the 997 base is the car for you.

I don't know...a base 997 is okay with me. I would rather have the S but the 997 is a great car. Glad to hear my car can hang with one but I do love a P car.

I hear what you're saying, and I'd probably pony up for the S as well. But I stand by my assertion that the base 997 is a hell of a car. For some people, $72K is already a stretch but they want a 911, and I see no shame in buying a "lowly" base 997.

You can get a new 2008 997-1 C4S for 20% off or more (i.e. right at $80k)

I am with Z4HN on this, if you are going to do it, then do it right. I was in a similar predicament with the M Coupe vs 3.0si save up an extra couple months and get the real deal.

I heard there was an evo magazine that said the M coupe was a good porsche alternative. I am told it came out when the M Coupe was launched. Does anyone have it?

PS I am a big Porsche fan and dream of owning a 911 Turbo when I grow up

I don't think EVO's editors ever said that, though they've been more sympathetic to the Z4 M Coupe than most. In the article about the launch a rep from BMW was asked if the M Coupe's performance target was the Cayman S; the rep replied "No, we were aiming for the 911."

The reason I remember it is because it sparked my modification scheme: the plan to make a M Coupe using only BMW OEM parts that would equal or exceed a base 997 in looks (CSL wheels and aero sideskirts) and performance (3.91 diff). With a 3.91 diff and the same PS2s as the 997, history would be very different in regards to the Z4M.
