Decisions, Keep the Z4MC or go for the P car 993
So I have a 2006 Z4MC, that I've had for 3+ years now. I love the car, it's a great car, and it ticks a lot of boxes. My problem (1st world) is that I've always lusted after an air cooled 911, in particular the 993. I've come across a 96 993 with decent mileage and at a fair price, more than twice what my Z4MC is worth and I thinking of pulling the trigger. Going to see the P car tomorrow, my wife is the best, she's all about you've always wanted one. Am I wrong to do this?
I had a 996 about 10 years ago, I paid about $30K for it, a great car but it was like driving my Volvo wagon. You could be doing 180KMH sipping a latte and changing your jazz radio station, no drama....ever. I could have had a 993 for about $40K but couldn't afford it then (dammit), I can afford it now though and I'm conflicted.....I love cars and have a short attention span. I've loved the air cooled 911's for decades, their prices are going through the roof....it's not about money, well maybe a bit, but really about having a raw sports car. The Z4MC is a lot of that, but Porsche has always been about sports cars and racing like Ferrari. BMW makes a great car, but racing and sports cars is like an after thought, they do it well but not like Porsche, who have gone soft with the Cayenne, Macan and Panamerica.....but back in the day it was all about sports cars and racing. So budget is an issue, if I won the lottery this wouldn't be a discussion, I'd keep my Zed and get a Porsche Singer, or is it Singer Porsche? Regardless, I can manage a really nice 993 now, not as quick as the Zed, but shit a gorgeous car, raw and the real deal. Comments? Help a brother out..... thoughts Last edited by RABAUKE; 10-13-2017 at 10:03 PM.. |

tough choice. I think a nice 993 is cooler, but at over twice the price.... is it twice as cool?
I dont think so. (but to a laymans eye it probably is, hence its price). What is the asking price for the 993? (and maybe more important, the mileage) the z4mc is much rarer and will go up more in value percentage wise (I think the 993 already has risen very much). I presume its a c2 with manual?

I could have bought one about 10 years ago for about $45,000 CAD, they are asking $69,000 for it. C2S and C4S are in the range of $110,000 and up.....I know they have gone up in price in the last 10 years so I don't think I'd lose money on it, and they may go up a bit more in the future. |

I dont think you'll loose money over it, but I also dont think you'll loose money over the z4mc.
So there's only one logical conclusion: keep the z4mc and buy the 993

Do what your heart wants because, really, you don't want to regret not having a 993 down the road. Plus, you'll be able to cherish the few years of Z4M ownership also.
See my post history...I thought I'd never sell the Moupé but it's up in the classifieds as we speak. Us car guys are a fickle bunch, but that's the beauty of it |

Test drive it and then decide. If it speaks to you, get it!
I recently had a ride in a 70's 911. Simplicity, great engine note, classic looks. I'd be constantly on the lookout for the skid demon, but I'd love to spend time with one nevertheless. The 993 would bring most of the good of the earlier car plus a nice dose of handling improvement and sophistication. It's on my "next car" list for sure. |

I pulled the trigger. I'll post up some pix when I take delivery in a few weeks. So far no buyers remorse.......but it's only been about 3 hours.

I was going to say that it's hard to talk someone out of a 993 (although I think they are a bit overpriced)...
Congratulations! Looking forward to the pictures.

Sorry, Silver Grey Metallic and I actually traded it, got a good price and with the offset on the sales tax it was worth it to deal it away that way.

Within a few months you'll see that z4mc for sale at that same dealer for the price you now paid for that porsche.
Thats how fast they'll rise in value

Assuming no financial crisis I suspect the 993 may go up a bit in value, I doubt it will go down though as they are selling for more now than they did when they were new. I'm always happy when I sell a car and don't take a beating on it. 996's are still dropping in value as are 997's, but not as fast. In a few years they will both be fully depreciated and may start to go up in value.....who knows, if I tire of the 993 maybe I can sell it in a few years and bank some cash plus pick up a nice 997S.....shit, I don't even have the 993 and I'm talking about the next car......I have a problem. |
