Possible for a Factory Looking Half Cage?
I've been wanting to up the safety in my car for the past year but just haven't been able to get around it. Now the season is wrapping up, I really want to get a half cage put in so I can run a 6 point and HANS. However, as superficial as it sounds I really don't want to have to remove or permanently modify the interior. I know some of you are thinking "skip messing with a cage in the car and get a proper race car (e36/46) or go full cage if anything" but couple of things:
1) I've already accepted this is a weekend track car so don't require another separate track car 2) Although it is my dedicated (DE) track car, I still require it to be street legal since I drive to/from track. 3) I know I never plan to race the car, at most TT which in that case follows DE rules when it comes to safety so I don't mind committing to this platform 4) I'm not that tall (5'9" and my torso is on the longer side) so don't require much leg room nor space behind me. So my question is, does anyone know if a functioning (welded) half cage is possible in this car w/o removing the rear deck, while still meeting BMW CCA, NASA, PCA, etc. safety standards? Would love the factory look from this car =) Last edited by 3002 tii; 10-27-2013 at 08:49 PM.. |

Thats about the closest to the cage design I think you're going for. Theres also this full cage where they kept the interior. I know you don't want a full cage but its an idea of how the half cage could sit behind the seats. It might be possible to keep the interior if you find a way to cut it just right for the cage to come through. There might also be the possibility of using the roadster peices since they're designed to have roll hoops coming through them.
