M roadster exhaust sound

Hi guys, I just traded in my 335 for a z4 m roadster that I will be getting next week and I only have one worry. For me the exhaust sound is very important and I absolutely love the sound of the e46 m3. However a friend of mine told me that the z4m does not sound even close to as loud as the m3 because of its more restricted exhaust. I have not heard the z4m, is this true? Is the car loud and raspy at WOT? I hope so, thanks

Bad news: M Roadster doesn't sound very impressive when revving at idle.

Good news: Run the M Roadster up past 5K rpm and beyond - especially in 3rd or 4th gear. Makes the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

the stock exhaust is very quiet just like the stock m3. I personally think its louder than the M3 because in a roadster u sit very close to the exhaust so no worries. I just ordered Rogue Engineer's Diablo exhaust which is suppose to be very loud.

Thanks for the responses guys, hopefully I will like it. I am planning on deleting my resonator if I think it is not loud enough. I took over a lease with ten months left, so I don't want to spend too much money on the car.

If you're inside the car it sounds 1000x better then an e46 ever will, this is vouched for by several e46 m3 owners who have ridden in my car.

Outside is another matter, not as loud and a little different of a note, but better.

Besides the secondary cats the exhaust in these cars is a lot less restrictive.

The overall exhaust itself is a better design than the E46 M3, For starters we have a true X pipe and that right there kills the rasp, I think we have 2 more cats? Or something that kills a little power in our exhausts over the M3? anyone feel free to chime in/correct me
and again duplicating O-cha's comments I have a few buddies with a E46 M3 and they preferred the sound of the Z4,
Its a lot more growl and grunt at high rpm than raspy tinny noise that comes from the M3,

and yeah it sounds awesome from the inside, and better when the tops down, suns shining and your looking at 7900RPM on the tach

cool! I think im the only person that loves the rasp in the m3, but i guess a little growl never hurt anyone right?

Okay- have several friends with e46 m3s and here is what I have personally observed-

1. stock exhaust sounds good at WOT
2. E46 M3 sounds louder and a little raspier at idle outside the car
3. Interior sounds similiar
3. After market exhausts- the tables turn vastly in our favor. The e46 guys add rasp pipes and etc... to get a sound like ours. My Supersprint M coupe always turns heads with e46 m3 owners (even those with aftermarket exhausts and rasp pipes).

Congrats.

Stock vs.. stock the Z4M sounds better than the E46 M3. With an aftermarket X pipe and mufflers, the Z4M has a very aggressive Ferrari-like sound that will really turn you on if you are into how the car sounds. It's a big investment if you are only keeping the car 10 months; perhaps you can find something used.

Its so hard to find a good used exhaust theres only a handful of z4m's outa there and nevermind the amount with aftermarket exhaust

Get supersprint race cans from LeatherZ for $1200ish. Fairly good bargain for the aggressive sound. No need to do the Xpipe unless you want more sound.

It should be noted that the stock exhaust opens up a bit after 5k miles or so and gets somewhat deeper.

Sometimes an exhaust without as much bark is a good thing. I prefer the bite without the bark to not draw attention

I don't mind the sound so much as the looks.

I agree. I get more compliments on the looks. We live in a quiet neighborhood, and the neighbors keep a list of the most "obnoxious" neighbors and I didn't want to go into their book!

One of the sales guys from Niello Maserati drives this ever day and he wakes me up every day! The exhaust sounds great, but it rattles windows and you can hear him from afar.
