FYI Parts Availability

I was at BMW of Austin today trying to buy a new steering wheel for the Z4. Mine has very very badly cracked leather and a few shops have told me there is no way they couldsuccessfully re-dye or recover it to anything close to OEM quality, due to the complex shape and tri-color stitching. Fine, whatever, it'd be nicer to have that brand-new-from-the-dealer leather feel, and I have no intention of selling the car so why not spruce it up a bit.

Long story short, it cannot be bought. There are 0 in inventory in the US or Germany. The parts folks said they have been notified that supplier contracts are ending and and BMW has chosen not to renew, and as such, Z3 and E85/E86 Z4 parts (especially the model-specific stuff) are going to be extremely difficult to source going forward. If you had something on your "some-day list", you might want to get it now before it's unavailable!

Same thing going on with the Toyota Supra. Tough times for those of us who enjoy unique rare sports cars, but want to keep them running forever.

As for the steering wheel, I was just able to order one from US dealer, direct ship from Germany. There should be some still available if you look around?

Check BMW of south atlanta

On the flipside, so many Z4 convertibles were made that you're bound to find used parts. Also Z4s share many parts with other models. Sadly, the Coupe will be the toughest to source (body panels, etc). As for the steering wheel, if you still can't find one, Ebay has some, and you can always pay a shop to recover the leather. I doubt nothing is too complex for these guys! I can find you a competent company that will rewrap your wheel

You must have gotten the very last one. They showed me the computer with 0 availability in any distribution center. I ended up picking up a new one on eBay.

Hmm.. there are at least four different variations of the M-sport steering wheel. Did you try all part numbers? I went with the most bare-bones M-sport wheel since I'll be swapping over my current switches and covers anyway...
