first snow
and it came with brute force. about 3~4 inches of accumulation for the first snow... damn i didn't even get a flurry before this haha
coming home from work wasn't too bad...cleared the roads 30 degrees+wet slush my F1's handled the road nicely tried to go out to eat some food after like an hour or two and i could not get my ass up a slow sloping hill. stuck there for like 5~10minutes before i maneuver my self back down and to my drive way. lol I did fine on summer tires with FWD one winter but damn this RWD crap is no joke. I went around a half worn All seasons last winter and it seem to do fine but the F1 froze like a big block of rubber. remember it has nooo sipings to get traction it's continuous rubber tread I'm still excited to see the snow. I have NOTHING against it... cept stupid drivers that brings with it

When I saw that there was even a chance for snow last weekend I drove my car to the garage...

I'm tempted to take my car out of storage just to see how it handles on the snow covered roads. I live in the "'burbs" and I have several areas where I could safely take the Z4 out and test it's winter limits. I have new 19" M6 wheels/tires on order, but I'm tempted to abuse these P.O.S. RFT's while I still have em.

I bought Dunlop M3 snow tires last weekend at the Tire Rack in South Bend about 5 hours before an ice storm. M Coupe handled great. On Wednesday drove back up to South Bend on business through a driving snow at about 45 mph. Although the going was slow (4 hours) the car handled great and I never took the DSC off.

I would never take a car like that out in snow unless i wanted to kill myself.... i throw on snow tires every year.... i dont need to smash my car[s] into walls or poles or people.

Mine hasn't seen the snow yet either, driving my trusty rusty '91 Ford Mustang instead
There is still tons of snow on the ground here, I'll see if I can't get a good parking lot drift video

One of my neighbors was mentioning how my Z4 hasn't left the garage since it got cold, much less after we started getting snow. I figure it would do fine, my 325i is essentially the same and that's my "winter beater," but with another car I've never had the urge. One reason I'm getting an M Coupe is to extend my sports car driving time into those cold - but clear - winter days and nights. I'll likely swap in my 325i for a E46 3-series cab now so I'll still get some drop-top time. Hmm, maybe I can swing an early M3 convertible, prices are plummeting on those...

Germany (and pretty much every other country in Europe) has much more stringent driver training than North America. They are also much more strict about the condition of the cars on the road and, iirc, require snow tires during the winter months. Here in the US, your nice new M Coupe can be taken out by a rusted out 70s Camaro on 4 bald tires and its muffler dragging on the ground, and the person would be outraged at your criticism that the car might be unsafe. And of course he won't have insurance. |
