2007 Z4m coupe or Porsche 993?

I now drive a 993 6 speed coupe with pss9s and fister 3 mufflers and I like it...but I've become obsessed with the Z4m coupe.
I'm going to try to drive one next week to see what it's like.
Feedback from others who've driven both please.

I've had a few Porsches... but my coupe experience is only 997 Turbos... of which there is really no comparison to the Z4M Coupe. Porsches really drive nice.. a little weird at times with the weight of the engine being where it is, but overall easier IMO than the Z4 (although I haven't had the Z4 that long).

I like the looks of the Z4M Coupe over the 996... you're going to lose those rear seats and the openness of the cabin, but it's more of what you're looking for that matters. The 996 will probably continue to depreciate, where the Z4M has probably bottomed out and may start to increase in value due to rarity. The 996 is kinda the red headed step child of the 911 line up. The front lights are a love or hate issue.

I'd say go for it... worse case, you buy another 996 in a few years for cheaper... or step up to a 997 which is worlds better interior wise.

But the OP has a 993(not a 996) which is THE most sought after classic P-car of late. I would not give that up for a Z4M. Now if you will be keeping the 993, sure get a Z4M to go along with it.

i love the 993. i have a z4m. if i were to change or sell my z4m for a 993 it would have to be a turbo. otherwise i would keep the m coupe. i have driven both and they are both fantastic in their own way. i say drive one first and go from there.

comparison pics with my friends

I own a '90 964 and have not driven a 993. But from what I've heard, the experience is somewhat similar, with the 964 being a little more raw.

With that said, I don't think the M Coupe is in the same class of car, even compared against my older 911. I view it as a better GT touring car, but I feel like the car is not raw and really sharp like a 911. Having the motor up front is the fundamental difference. Having a drive shaft is also a downer, because you get all that lag and lash. I love how the 911 motor revs so quickly. The Z4M revs quickly, but nowhere near as close to the 911.

Both of my cars feel equally fast in a straight line. My 911 has Bilstein shocks and GC coilovers, chip, exhaust, 4-pot rear caliper conversion. My Z4MC has Koni shocks, GC coilover, SS brake lines, Stoptech pads.

911 wins:
-Brakes on the 911 are FAR superior.
-Steering feel and response on the 911 are FAR superior.
-Ride quality in the 911 is way better too, probably from not sitting on the rear wheel.
-Cargo space is probably a little more in the 911 due to the rear area.
-More active forum community
-Gas mileage 16 (but probably because I only drive my 911 when I want to really have fun)

Z4M wins:
-Interior on the Z4M is nicer and more supportive.
-Maintenance is harder on the 911, because of the motor location.
-Looks are super unique and parts are a little cheaper.
-Gas mileage 20 (but probably because I drive this car nicely)

If you have the room and budget, both.

Otherwise, 993.

Lol... not sure why I read that 996... too early on a Monday I suppose.

I personally love 993's... that's a tough call. I can't imagine just letting go of a 993 for any real reason.

If the OP was closer, I'd swap him for a week.

Keep the 993! Add a Z4M coupe if possible....I was very close to picking up a 993 in 2008 when they were dirt cheap compared to now and still kick myself. A true classic!

My brother had a 993 turbo a million years ago and I drove it once. JEEZUS!! I'd opt for a 993 in a heartbeat, if I were trying to choose one or the other. That said, I'm very happy with my Z4MC and intend to own it for the duration.

Lol! Z board yes, but I think it's the enthusiast foundation and appreciation of more raw, visceral sports cars that makes us appreciate the 993.

I'd say drive a Z4M. Then see if someone here wants to trade if you want one! Bet there would be takers (me perhaps).

I would be very interested in trading my Z4MC *or* my supercharged Z4MR for a clean 993 any day.

993/z4mc

Thanks for the input. Those pics side by side are great...beautiful mcoupe!
My 993 is also black with twists and lowered with pss9s, no aero kit though.
I'm set to drive a z4mc tomorrow, but I can't afford two cars, I also have a sailing addiction.
I need a meeting bad.
The one I'm driving tomorrow is also black with carbon interior also black. Only upgrade is a c/f gurney flap. Only 39000 on the clock.
Will a ppi show over-revs on the m-motor?
I'll let you know driving impressions .

No. But I don't think thats a common problem with the rev limiter.

And the redline in the S54 is 7900 rpm. You don't exactly get to 7900 rpm by mistake, or without noticing.

I love 993's but with the state of the current market I would have a hard time not taking advantage of the crazy prices

So have you driven the Z4 M coupe yet?

I had a 95 993 and E86 M. When it came time to sell one of them, sadly I let go of the 993. I LOVED it, but I had a non-working AC, I had bit of bubbles forming near the rust prone areas of lower corners of the windshield and back window. Since mine was a 95, I didn't need to worry about valves throwing CEL for smogging, so it was one less thing to worry about. But I just figured as great and classic as the 993 is, it'll take more $$ to keep it in a great shape. That was pretty much the only reason I decided to keep the Z4.

My wife loved the 993 as well. Mine had the PSS10s and it rode better, handled more predictably vs the Z. The S54 in the Z4 in a way requires more maintenance as it needs regular valve adjustment and the 993 was pretty much bullet proof, just the issues I wanted to fix, I was looking at about 10-15k to address.

The brakes on the 993 is actually miles better over the 964 or 930. Mine had the regular black brakes, not the big reds. Maybe that's why the Z has more powerful brakes, just that the feel and fade-resistance go to the 993 brakes.

Keep the 993 away better value, consider 996 upgrade or turbo 997 in a few years, Z4M will always be available for a vg price over the foreseeable future.

Z4m coupe

I finally drove a 2007 m coupe today . It had 30,000 on the clock and looked new. Owner stated there were some dings but he had them fixed. I saw I bit of overspray on the pass door.
I was surprised at how tame it was cruising on the freeway, but it really gets it on 7/10-8/10.
The exhaust was stock and was fairly quiet, even under hard acceleration.
But my 993 has the fister stage III's, sounds like a 930 on decel.
Steering is totally different of course, but turn-in on the m coupe was terrific.
The suspension was stiffer than expected. I couldn't imagine putting on H&R coil overs . Pss10's maybe, a little less bouncy cruising and stiffer under hard cornering.
Engine sounds are awesome. Different from a flat 6 but tachs almost 1000 rpms higher....GT3 territory.
Cockpit orientation is very different, almost on rear axle, which explains slightly bouncy ride.
But I loved the car, I'm trying to decide if I should pull the trigger.
He's asking 35,000. Black sapphire black interior. No sat/nav
It's one or the other, can't have both. I think his price is a little high.
Thanks

$35k is a little high for 33k miles, but values are going up slightly and thats part of the process.

The stock exhaust is terribly quiet for a performance car, but there are plenty of options to make it sound how it should.

Believe it or not, but most coilovers will actually improve the ride. I think you would be content with a set of kw's with an slight drop. It will ride much better than stock
