Just for fun, iPhone X vs. DSLR test...

Using one of my favorite subject, of course.

iPhone X, portrait mode, natural lighting selection.

Nikon D200, ISO 200, white balance set to "Daylight", f 2.8 on Sigma 24-70 zoom lens, focal length 38mm-ish (which translates to 54mm on DX sensor), spot metering.

DSLR raw files were imported into Photoshop and exposure/saturation/etc were adjusted to mimic the iPhone shots. iPhone photos were imported as JPEGs (c'mon Adobe. No HEIF/HEIC support? Seriously?) and cropped to the same size and aspect ratio as the DSLR files (iPhone shoots at higher pixel count than a 10 year old DSLR. Who'd thunk?)

Tell me which picture (A or B) is shot with an iPhone, which one shot with my DSLR, and WHY you think so.

I'll say that A was shot with a DSLR - because the background, and even the extreme foreground, is in much sharper focus. That suggests that you were controlling the aperture and keeping it small (either directly or through a longer shutter speed) to get a nice sharp image; you can't typically exercise that sort of control with an iPhone.

It will be fun to see what the true story is!

I'll give this a go! Though I'd be interested in seeing the Nikon native JPEG's since the comparison includes iPhone native JPEG. Gives it a more level playing field because with editing RAW files, you can go any way with it. That said:

A = Nikon
B = iPhone
Confidence level: LOW

Reasons:
A looks to have lighter shadows, similar to brightening shadows from RAW. It also looks to have higher midtone contrast and sharpness than I'd expect either of these cameras to give natively, possibly results of RAW editing/importing. Lastly, it's got a slight blue hue - putting the camera in daylight white balance might add a blue hue to counteract orange sunlight.

That said, this all could be backwards I'd actually expect f2.8 to be closer to B, but I guess portrait mode might give a tighter DOF. Whichever the result is, I like B better!

Phones these days are crazy. I'd highly recommend checking out the Snapseed & Photoshop Express apps. They're really powerful apps if you like to adjust specifics, though they also have typical filters.

Funny you should ask. This set here will probably give y'all some clues, although I picked a set that's purposefully ambiguous for the first post. I posed a set of about 10 photos (1 from each camera, so 5 sets total) on my Facebook page and one of my photographer friends got all but 1 set right, and then immediately corrected himself when he spotted the tell-tale sign of an iPhone shooting in Portrait Mode.

But the dude is a world renowned fashion photographer with ~50 years of professional photography experience so I expect him to figure it out quickly.

I spent about 15 minutes on the DSLR file to make it mimic the iPhone's exposure/black point/brightness and contrast...etc, but there are certain things that the camera captures that even I can't fake in post.

Not in 15 minutes anyway.

Damn, I think I got it backwards lol. The f2.8 has too tight a DOF to mix it up. I'm surprised the initial post iphone pic had such high midtone contrast and detail/clarity in that pic first pic without editing (front of splitter, bricks in background, etc.).

The car looks great BTW

I continue to be surprised by how good modern day mobile phone cameras are, how much information they can jam into that tiny lens and sensor.

I have the iPhone X as well and I'm really impressed with the cameras ability. My dads an amateur photographer whose owned some really high end DSL's and even noted how good the photos are on the X. Seems to still struggles in low light conditions though.

That's probably a function/limitation of the size of the sensor.
