245/40-18,285/35-18 Nitto NT-05
Oh my lord...!
I had Michilin PS2's (stock Sizes) after I first got the car and I really enjoyed those tires however, since they/I went to the Super Sports (275's rear) I had been unimpressed. On my basic tunned Z4MC I was getting tones of weel spin in first, second and third. The car felt like it was riding on basketballs no matter what the pressure was set at. Super sports = Super Lame for me even though others have had great things to say about them. Needless to say after 2 days on the Nitto's I still can't believe it. I will keep and eye on my tire wear for sure (people are saying 15k miles) but they are so quiet and stickey...! Bumps and everything transition softer and just over all driving down the highway doing nothing they seem to be amazingly better than the Super Sports. Now if you jump on it around 20mph in second the car squats and leaves instead of jumping sideways spinning. So far very impressed...! Also, they are $500 cheaper per set of four tires...bonus

What size rear wheels? Curious, as the 275 SS were really horrible on a smaller than 9.5" rear wheel.

they were/are mounted on 18x9 wheels.
Few days later with aggressive driving (after the mounting soap dries) with the NT-05's no clutch dropping or anything but I have still yet to spin a tire romping it in first after a little movement. THAT is saying something positive about the new kicks, from wheel spin galore to omg is the speedo really saying that right now lol...

I think I may be able to shed a little light on why there's such a variance between your experience and that of some other folks.
The NT05 is a square shouldered and much stiffer sidewall tire. Star Specs, NT05s, anything with a stiff and square sidewall seems to do alright at the minimum recommended rim size (9" is min for the 275/35/18 tire). The PSS does not. It seems to need to run in the middle of the rim width range. I ran the PSS's 275 on a 9" and 245s on an 8" wheel on the wife's car and they were horrible. The tire "crowned" and only the center was providing a contact patch (confirmed via pyrometer). Man were they bad on the road or on the track--pushing at the front and no rear traction! Just as you described. But, I put the same PSS tires on a 9" front and 9.5" rear wheel, bang, very sticky! I can't compare them to PS2s, but compared to themselves it was like a different tire. For the price, the NT05 is a good summer tire. The PSS is a great rain tire as well, and the NT05 is not. If you don't have need of that capability, the NT05, Direzza II, and a few others may be a better deal price-wise. |

The rims are F18-8,+35 and R18-9,+25 with zero rubbing, The car has the H&R sport springs on it as well no coilovers or anything.

FWIW I had NT-05s on my M3 and liked them a lot. Ran them on 9.5F/10.5R and they were very consistent. Haven't spent enough time on my dad's new PSS (235/40/18 / 265/35/18 on stock wheels) to really report back, but damn did it ever drive better than my bald BFGs

285/35/18 NT-05s REQUIRE a minimum width of 9.5" according to the tire manufacturer.
