Fixing the flaking paint from your wheel
I am not that brave when it comes to removing parts that require a battery disconnect. After the seat adventure I decided to take on the flaking paint on the steering wheel. I know the drop cloths may seem excessive, just bare with me
Here are the before, during and after shots of the wheel. I taped it all off, drop clothed the remainder of the area, and used short bursts of rustoleum primer/paint. Sand the area first [with something stronger than 220], then prep with alcohol [only the plastic bits], then tape, then paint. Below are the before, during and after shots. I wish I could get better photos of how really nice it came out. The iphone will have to do. I also had some clear coat laying around, I finished it with a coat of that. |

I can see a speck or two in the paint and it drives me mad, but no one is going to see it but me. Also-this wheel cover is SO much nicer to use than the nasty sticky flaking leather of the original wheel. It's a nice smooth ride. |

I did this the other day and only took about 15 minutes to get my airbag out and trim removed from my wheel. I was so nervous but it really wasn't bad AT ALL

That was my issue..removing the airbag. Did you disconnect the battery or do it with the 4 screw removal, pry and pray method? hehe.

I disconnected the battery and used 2 screwdrivers that I slid behind the airbag. There are 2 springs in there. Push them in pretty hard and the airbag literally unclips and will fall down. I was really nervous but just sucked it up and committed!!!!

You are brave indeed! and you prep your work properly. As for the steering wheel, I highly recommend refinishing it with black vinyl/fabric dye paint. A few companies make it, rustoleum, dupli-color etc. I've done it on many black steering wheels and it makes it feel new, by hiding scratches and discoloration. Also it won't flake because the leather doesn't flex on the wheel. Great post!
