StopTech ST-60 355mm

Hey folks, I have a question. It might seem an obvious answer but a lot of you have real life experience so that's why I'm asking here.

I just pulled the trigger on an ST-60 355mm kit (red, slotted) because I've wanted one for a while and I'm supercharged, so why not? Will I be ok using just the front kit for a while? Not going to be doing any full on track days yet, which I'm sure I'll get flamed for, but regardless it's the truth.

Would anyone run just a front BBK for hard street use and worry about the rear later? I'll obviously get the corresponding ST rear kit.

Thanks in advance for any and all info!

For a street driven car? Why would it not be okay?

I'll bet the overall piston area on the 6 piston kit is about 3-5% smaller than stock. That will effectively shift the brake bias REAR-ward. You'll probably get better result with the front only kit than say, throwing the rears from the 135i on the back side to make a frankens-kit. Heck, if I am right and the front piston area is 5% smaller than stock, you may actually get a better bias than the OEM set-up since BMW puts too much bias up front.

Remember it's not about which end gets the BBK, but how the BBK is ENGINEERED. Just because the front has more caliper pistons than the whole car used to have, and the rotor size has increased 10mm, doesn't mean it's doing more braking up front. The larger rotor size will increase brake torque (but by only 2.9%), but the main focus of the larger rotor size is to dissipate heat quicker. The 5 additional pistons won't be providing any more hydraulic pressure since their overall size is going to be smaller than the one giant piston provided in the sliding setup, so you'll get more consistent pressure all across, but LESS pressure being supplied up front. The end result is a consistent pedal feel, a stiffer pedal due to the same size master piston now pushing against smaller piston area, and less caliper flex due to the fixed piston design.

Yeah I could have explained all that with "yeah you're good to go bro."

But that's just not my style.

I appreciate that you take the time to explain it. I usually learn something new from your posts. Thanks Hack!

Well I just got news that the kit didn't get ordered in time and is going to cost more now, so no stoptechs for me at present.

for a street driven car even a hard driven one id stick with oem anyway and do the pad, fluid , rotor upgrade, lines, the oem setup is really nice for street duty and has a great pedal feel....

i have the proper uk AP front and rear setup, its incredible, after i went vt2 and doing track work the stock units just couldn't cope......

dont stress ATM if i was you and upgrade your stock items...

Yep that's kinda where I'm at. I already have ST SS lines installed, as well as brand new OEM rotors. I'll upgrade the pads when I need it. The brakes are damn good already for street use, and there're no tracks around here anyway. Thanks for the input guys!
