thanks! i'll be doing one for replacing the stereo too. It took a while for me to wrap everything around my head to understand how it would work but it all makes sense now. I may start next week!

Thanks prophetx for the great video. I just installed my V1 after work and it took me all of 45 minutes. The hardest part was getting through that sticky tape and finding the purple/white wire.
Valentine 1 FTW!

How did you decide on using the purple/white wire? I've never head of anyone using that wire...The normal wire to pull from that bundle is the green/white for power only when the key is in the "ON" position (past accessory).

I have not had to take off the A Pillar yet, but will be doing a video on that as soon as I get back to Cali for some other things I think. The wire slips between the crevice quiet well.
The purple/white wire was gotten from tons of reading on other posts. It is an accessory power and works just fine as well. I think initially I was looking for the green/white but some of the colors were harder to distinguish..the purple/white just stood out to me. |

The best tool I've found for pulling wires out of the bundle is a 25-cent paint can opener. Essentially a flat head screw driver with a curved tip. It's great for slipping in and pulling fishing wires out

The Video made the install super easy... It took me about 20 minutes to get it installed, the hardest part was getting all the damn wiring tucked away...

Great post! Is the purple / white wire 'switched' power? I was thinking of lower windshield mount and hard wiring into the cigarette lighter but the install you shared through your video looks very simple. I have a 'silence' button on my Bel Pro RX65 and I was going to replace the aux plug under the head unit with the switch. It'll require a dremmel tool to carve out the rectangular opening so I can fit the switch into the rectangular hole and it's in an inconspicuous location with plenty of room behind the panel which I popped off earlier today. I'm debating now, which way I want to mount the detector.
Thanks for sharing - this forum is awesome! |

So the purple/white wire will only get power when the key is switched to ON? I want the radar detector to turn off automaticlly whenever I turn the car off.

On All the Time On at Run/On - Only powered when the car is running On at Acc - Only powered when the key is at the accessory position I don't know what purple/white-stripe does but I do know that green/white-stripe is On at Run/On.

i can verify that the purple+white wire will switch on and off with the car. it is powered with key in position 2.
as an additional comment to the superb diy here, the removal of the reading lights assembly unit and the rear view mirror housing are both not required. i simply spiced into the purple+white, connected the provided main connector, grounded the black wire to one of the two screws inside the housing and used the straight phone line connector and pushed one end through the top of the headliner to pop out on the left side of my rear view mirror. super clean and easy installation, took less than 10 minutes! |
