Anyone here using a Visor Clip Radar Mount?

I realized our cars being SO LOW, most people (LEOs) would not notice a radar detector hanging from the mount when they walk up to your vehicle. Just want to know if anyone here in fact has used such a mount, and if so what's your experience so far?

I'm also looking at the rear view mirror mounts but I feel like that'd be more visible from the outside...

(Please keep this on topic and let's avoid "well if you don't speed, you wouldn't need a RD to begin with...")

I don't use a visor mount, but I did mount it high. I have an Escort 9500 hardwired with remote display. I have it mounted just above the mirror and on the passenger side. This still allows the visor to be functional. I could post some pics tomorrow if you are interested.

That'd be great!

I'm thinking of doing this for my 9500ix - one concern though is when you mount it too high, it might affect the GPS functionality since it doesn't have a "clear view" of the sky...

Btw - where in NJ are you from?

dub, i don't use a visor mount for my v1, instead i've hardwired it and used the provided suction cup mount on the driver's side in-between the top of the front windshield and the rear view mirror. it fits snugly such tt i retain full use of the visor, and is inconspicuous enough. have had absolutely zero issues with reception/response et al.

I don't have a big issue with the suction mount, only prob is given the curvature of the windshield, I can't get a firm hold unless I mount the radar directly in the middle, and I'd prefer it somewhat off-centered - closer to me.

There is no issue with GPS. It locks in almost instantly.

I am in Rockaway. If you got the hardwire kit, I would be happy to help you install it.

Great... I'll definitely think about this more.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'm good. Only asked because seems like we have quite a few NJ/NYC members wanting a gtg but never seems to happen.

If anything I'm contemplating getting the ZR4 Shifters, which in that case install should be pretty straight forward. I'll use one of those "add-a-fuse" kits to the brain of the Jammer and mount right by the fuse box. Run the direct cord from radar to brain across the windshield, down the A-pillar (that'll probably be the hardest part of the install). Shifters will be mounted in the lower center grill...

roffle, my car's at an independent for inspection I now, but i'll snap a few photos of my v1 setup for u this next weekend. it's exceptionally snug and has held on like glue to my windshield ever since i've stuck it on about 6 months ago.

dub, sounds like an extensive setup on the horizon.

+1. Only thing different is I use the dual lock fasteners on the suction cups because the cups fall off over time. These are the same as the EZPass fasteners.

I have my V1 over my mirror as well and it has been snug for over a year. It has good level like that.

If you use a visor mount in our car it will not see out the back well and the front of the detector looks down into your hood. I found this to not be very good with getting the detector to function optimally.

There are some pics of the setup on here...

I fabricated a mount that puts my Rd right up at the top of the windshield just to the right of the rear view mirror. Basically a 1/2 to 3/4 inch strip of metal with an "L" shape at the bottom to attach the RD mount to. I used the factory mount & simply removed the suction cups. I pulled the top trim off & screwed it to the flat spot where the visor also screws into. then I bent the mount to follow the curviture of the top of the windshield. the end result is that the RD is securely mounted just above & to the right of the mirror, out of the way, but still sees the GPS & more importantly still sees the rear "bogeys". I also added the hard wire kit so no unsightly wires. It is quickly disconnected & stored in the oddments tray for when I park with the top down.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. I have been pulled over and not had time to take down my radar and the cop never noticed it. Even when walking a little in front of my driver door, it is pretty inconspicuous when hung above the mirror.

I have hardwired as well as it is simple and very clean.

I have a Bel STI on visor mount with it hard wired. With out modification, it sits perfectly level. If you look closely, it is visible from the front but from a distance it might easily be anything from a garage door opener to some other device. With no wire/cable dangling from it, it does not draw attention by itself. I'd like to be able to move it rearward about 1-inch and maybe some how build up the visor on either side so it doesn't hang down like such an obvious "something" on the visor. I mean, it could be made even more hidden but it's not bad right now. My personal belief is that in VA they may specifically look for suction cups; unless placed on a tinted area of the windshield, suction cups are definitely easily seen...

In this position a detector probably does not see out the back well at all, but I'm really not that worried about it. Most of the time, if not all of the time, when a radar signal is coming from behind the car there is enough reflection from structures in front of the car (signs, trucks, bigger vehicles, etc.) that it gets picked up very very well from the forward facing sensor. Radar is after all easily reflected from other structures. This happens to me all the time on one particular highway (3 lanes each side, jersey barrier down the middle, regular exit and entrance ramps) I drive to and from work. I'll pass a cop sitting at the side pointing the same direction as the traffic flows and for at least a mile down the road after passing him/her the detector is still going off. Even after they are beyond line of sight, there is enough reflected radar to give a strong signal to the detector.

On our little trip to VIR this past weekend, I was following a Ford Fusion with about 1/4 mile between us. Was a great pace car - doing about 80. Not a lot of traffic, in fact it was just me and my pace car for long period of time. If you happen to be familiar with 360 heading west out of Richmond it's 55-60 mph posted and a really nice drive. It's a divided VA byway - two lanes on each side, wide grassy median in between, lost of rolling hills and direct turn offs on to side roads. The Bel worked like a charm. It started going berserk before we saw anything and I quickly, easily slowed to the posted limit. A few seconds later, he crested a hill on the opposite side, heading east on 360. I learned something here - our side of the road was probably 30-40 higher in elevation than ours and he was heading down hill compared to our side being basically level and he still evidently got a reading on the car ahead of us. A few moments later he was in the rear view mirror closing at a high rate of speed and then....flew right past us. Another few moments pass, we crest a slight rise in the road, and he's got the Fusion at the side of the road. From then on we kept it about +5mph until the next oblivious VA driver pace car came along. It may sound kind of opportunistic but hey, they'd be speeding no matter what so why no capitalize on it?

It's a side note, but detector usage is all about still being smart, anticipation, and understanding the technology fully. Anyone who gets one and thinks they don't have to think about speeding ever again is destined for some tickets that be default cannot be talked out of....

My V1 is hard-wired and on the driver side above the rearview mirror as well, not really noticeable outside the car looking in:

[EDIT] but it looks like the roadster has a LOT less room than the coupe there......

One thing that sucks for me is that the Escort has the power connection on the left side, so you wouldn't be able to hide the direct cord as easily...
