The whole thing is actually pretty irrelevant, BMW's strategy for dealing with these failures where pieces of cam gear cog, bolts, or any other piece of the vanos unit/valve train becomes loose internally is to just go ahead and replace the entire long block. It's just depressing to see these failure still occuring (even if the frequency is very low) since all MZ4's should be updated with all the new improved gears and bolts.

You'd be surprised to hear that BMW has recently been responding rather differently to engines with major internal issues (as far as I can tell, it is not clear if the OP's problem constitutes a major issue or not yet as I don't know what "a screw fell into the engine" means exactly). Yes, in the past, it appears that they would just hand over you a new engine for anything significant and internal, but that doesn't seem to be as true anymore. I won't get into the details, but let's just say that I've had some first hand experience with dealing with that kind of thing while I owned an E92 M3...

Again, that does not constitue a destroyed engine by a long shot.

Depends who is defining "destroyed" because for the most part in BMW's eyes (at least in the past) the solution is replacing the entire long block.
Now if I was doing the repair, It would be a whole different thing but all these cars are still under warranty so like I said before it's pretty irrelevant.

Thanks for the details guys!
They drained out the oil and found no bits and pcs of metal. They ordered some gaskets and small parts and put it back together, but the engine still won't start. They're still figuring it out. The car is a 2006, 11000 KM to date, never really driven really hard, like we're supposed to. Was planning to keep this car forever and track it when it's book value is close to nil. What am I gonna do with the brand new in box SS race step headers, race cats, x-pipe and race exhausts that are to arrive in 3 weeks!!!!! |

Is it turning over at all and just not firing? Hopefully they don't tear apart your engine for an electrical problem like that one guy who had his head taken off because he has an Oring leak oil and the tech decided his headgasket was blown.

same thing happened to my 05 e46 M3 last yr. But u got lucky, i was going 80 mph on freeway and it stalled. Almost got kill because of this. Anyway, it turned out to be same issue like yours. Stupid Bolts got suck in and kill the engine. They replaced a brand new Engine, but after that the car start having problems. So .... Good Luck <Did they do any Tune b4 ? cuz i got Tune by dealer then shit happened right after> BTW, they should give u a Bimmer to drive around ... i got 335coupe for 1 month.

Yeah lucky I was at the drive through. Probably cause I donated 1 dollar to the McDonald's foundation a day earlier... so I got blessed.
Two screws came off, split in half and went into the engine. The timing's off, so the valves pushed and the pistons probably are bent too.... I'm guessing.. the valves are bent and won't seal properly. I got a 323 as a courtesy... not bad, but no power You mind telling me what issues came out after you had the engine replaced? So I can prepare for some issues that may rise? They told me verbally that if the engine get's replaced, they'll give 2 more years warranty on the engine too. |

You have to go through breakin process. 1200mi under 4500rpm and under 110mph or so. then get an oil change at 1200mi. Yes new engines come with 2 year 50,000mi warranty from install day IIRC.

Here is the list of Issues that occurs after Replaced Engine:
1. Cold start the engine makes LOUD squeezing noise. 2. Car stalls when back up slowly. <its SMG @@"> 3. Engine shakes a lot compare wiz b4. 4. Can hear the Engine not running smooth like b4. 5. Interior lights dim while aggressive driving. Above issues made me take more than 15 trips back to Different dealership. In the end, i gave up and move on to M Rody BTW, they only extend warranty on Engine for another year ... |

Got her back, some bent valves are replaced.
Engine light is on, and some consistent clicking noise from the engine. BMW says I have to drive about 1000 KM to work the new parts in and they will do some adjustments after. Still very powerful car.... |

Glad to hear that your back on the road.
I would imagine valves will need re-shimmed after a few kms.
