Another Z4M down... Hopefully not for the count
Yep, as I write this my beautiful M sits at the body shop where they're beginning to disassemble it.
Yesterday I was running the typical errands; bank, post office, lunch, dealership to get my cupholder fixed, and the last stop of my day was to pick up some 303 Aerospace from Napa (oh the irony in getting hit as I'm stopping for detailing supplies) I (blue blob) was turning right into the lot, but a giant molester van (green blob) was exiting the lot through the one-way entrance and trying to make a left turn. This forced me to come to a stop with my turn signal on while I waited for him. Out of nowhere this woman smokes the back of my car. Her path is in the red. I looked at my mirror in time to see her front end dive, hear her tires squeal and feel her impact my car. After which she careened across the eastbound lanes, glanced off a telephone pole as she hopped the curb, and came to a rest in the parking lot across the street. Suprisingly, I stayed calm and didn't rip her head off... might have been because she was in her 50's and super apologetic. Immediately admitting fault saying she was in a hurry home from work and not paying attention. Cops showed and spoke with her then came across the street to see my car and get my story. First thing he says is "oooooh man... ouch!" I mention her admitting fault and he said she already told him she was to blame. Michigan is a "no-fault" state, so I have to claim it against my insurance, but they'll then go after her provider. I just really hope my rates don't go up. He ended up citing her for failure to control vehicle, driving too fast for conditions, and something else. So definitely ruined my day, and the shop is saying 3-4 weeks for the repairs - don't think it's totaled. On the plus side, she swerved... which kept it from being a lot worse; and we were both fine physically. On to the carnage...

And yes... that's a shard of her front bumper in the last pic (the piece is about 6" long and embedded into my car).

Damn....
So sorry to hear about this. That really blows chunks!!!! On the plus side I'm glad that everyone is OK. It certainly looks repairable from those pics. That fact she swerved and made it a glancing blow made a HUGE difference. Good luck getting things sorted. |

Oh no! I was just looking at pictures of your car last night since we both have SG Coupes. When I saw the title of this thread I started to feel sick. Sucks this happened but atleast it doesn't look too too bad. Still not a pretty sight. Poor exhaust pipe. I don't think it will affect the way it drives once they fix it up. I'd post up on some local sections of different (makes) car forums and find a body shop that doesn't good work and take it there. Good luck!

Yeah she was doing about 40-50, if she hadn't glanced off the corner things would be different I'm sure.
The shop is well respected around here (and an authorized BMW repair center) and they're going to keep me updated with pics as the repairs progress - so I'll keep the thread updated as well.

Awww crap, man! You're definitely lucky that it was "just" a glancing blow, but still! Wish you better luck with your teardown than I got!

This is one of the cleanest M coupes out there. Hate to see it damaged. On a positve note the damge does not look to bad. Looks like you may be able to keep her. And while the M is in the shop, you will be able to keep the milage down.

Yeah, the plan was to keep this car forever. As long as it drives the way it did the day before the accident, I'll be happy.

That looks very fixable to me. I expect they will replace the entire bumper with new. Is the rear quarter on the coupe removable? Get them to do a four wheel alignment at the local BMW dealer in case the wheels became miasligned in the collision.

I too am interested to hear how they will fix the quarter panel. That is part of the unibody from what I can see. The bumper and tail light are easy and it looks like the rear hatch is unscathed.

Ugh. Makes my heart race just seeing that. Did you stay cool? I would have flipped out. I actually did kinda flip out in October when someone rear-ended me texting

I'm really glad I added a rider to my policy to cover my aftermarket exhaust.

my old car (2004 325i) was in the shop for 3 weeks before. If anything driving the Toyota rental made me love my car even more. I would recommend telling the shop that they can keep the car as long as they want to ensure they do a proper job and not cut corners.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad you're both ok.
That looks very fixable, and will probably be undetectable when you get it back. I think you got lucky with that hit. |

The woman was definitely at fault but... damn you should beat the shit out of the dumbass that blocked you in in the first place. If he didn't come out through the wrong way then you would have been free from the woman coming toward you.
At least you're OK, and the damage looks fixable. |

The rear quarter panel is removable. Every exterior body panel is bolt on, even the roof. So they should be able to make your car perfect again as long as the work is done properly.

That sucks man And just after you put on your new license plate too! Sad to see stuff like this. Seems like a lot of carnage happened yesterday, what is the deal?

Yep, the shop said the panels are all bolt on (vs. welded on), so replacement will be easy. From everything I've seen and read about them, they definitely know their stuff when it comes to BMWs.
