miracle,
If you're referring to the prominent "tapping" sound, that sounds like a valve clearance that's too large. Fixing it involves adjusting the clearances, which is a straightforward job for a trained mechanic. Unfortunately, other things can produce a somewhat similar sound, some of them bad news. But out-of-tolerance valve clearances are not uncommon. Checking them and readjusting them are regular maintenance items. Good luck, and let us know what it turns out to be. Rick F. |

Classic BMW N52 lifter tick. I've heard it on my parents X3, it goes away and comes back, I think it's mostly harmless?

Its an HVA fault. Its caused by oil starvation, the hydraulic adjusters for the valves need oil to function and if they starve, you get lifter slap, which is that noise. Time for an oil change perhaps?
It won't cause any damage, but it won't be great for engine function as the valve clearances are diminished. |

It seems pretty loud but could it be the DISA Valve ??? I have to replace mine at about 70,000 miles, very easy to do only a few bolts to remove... I bought my replacement at ECS Tuning for like $90.00... It is worth checking.
Sorry $290.00 http://www.ecstuning.com/ES25793/

i have a strong feeling that it is your disa valve. Try to unplug the disa connecter while the engine is running. If the ticking sound goes away then you should replace your disa valve asap as it can destroy your engine.

Very unlikely to be the DISA valve, as it was upgraded in the N52 engines. The pre-facelift Z4s are the ones which will have DISA issues. +1 for lifter tick due to lack of oil at the top. It's a common issue, unfortunately.

That's the notorious N52 lifter tick problem. I had the same thing. The dealer swapped out the lifters and the ticking went away.
I read that the ticking will probably come back if the heads aren't replaced as well. Problem with that is BMW won't replace the heads unless ticking returns after lifter replacement. I've only driven about 2500 miles since lifters were replaced and I haven't had any ticking since. There's a huge thread on it covering years of information. Some owners have been able to get dealers to replace lifters and heads. Others just lifters. Others none at all. Here's the thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13504" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://www.e90post.c...hp?t=13504</a>

I'm going with lifter tick as well. If it goes away when you rev it up (oil pressure goes up and lubricates the lifters more) then it's most likely the lifters. If you get a loud rattle sound when you rev it up, then there are quite a few possibilities on the table, a spun rod bearing being one of them. That said, I believe this is coming from the lifters.
