So I've been doing just that.

By pulling hard left and down, I can shift as fast as I can slam back the shifter and it goes into the gate perfectly. If I use the same speed but pull straight back there's definitely some teeth/grinding happening.

I wonder if anyone else can confirm it, since I could always be unconsciously pausing a little when focusing on pulling left.

First try shifting first to second by slamming it straight back as fast as you can from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration. If you have resistance/grinding, try it again but this time pull as far left as you can when doing it and see if the behavior improves.

Beta I simply can't replicate this grinding issue?????
I would guess a synchro issue from past experience .....

Bee can you please warm up the car and slam 2nd into gear? no pause or heartbeat method, just kick the clutch and slam it into 2nd. This is how you reproduce. please no flames, i know it's the wrong way of shifting any car but this is always a good way to see your gearbox tolerance. especially that the e46 M3 unit will let you slam 2nd gear as if you had a dogbox.

In my gearbox, the shifting back & left doesn't even work without a small pause. maybe i should check if my clutch needs bleeding ?

Does anyone know if I would be able to install 1 mount at a time? I'd like to install the intake side mount this weekend when I replace my leaking Power Steering line, and install the exhaust side mount in a month or 2 when I install headers. I can ask Vibra Technics, but I figured I'd tap into forum wisdom as well.

That would be possible. I had to raise my engine an inch higher to get the exhaust side mount in after I had the driver's side installed.

If you get the engine raised enough for the exhaust side you'll have plenty of clearance for the drivers side. And it would only add few extra minutes to the install. Then when you do your exhaust all you have to do is remove the top nut. I would recommend replacing both at the same time if it's going to be a couple of months. Trust me, you won't regret it.

FWIW
Ill be using the method of removing the intake and loosening the engine mount at the block, rather than jacking the engine up.
Ill do the same on the exhaust side when changing the headers.
If you haven't done it already, its also a good time to upgrade the mount bolts at the block.

ian as you know i was very concerned about lifting the motor..... i completely removed the mount frames and STILL need to life the motor.... even with all my s/c plumbing in place, it really was a non issue.... dont worry about have to use the jack to slightly lift each side, their is alot of room to play with after actually doing this/seeing it with my own eyes...... i actually enjoyed taking my time on this and DIY it..... Very pleased with these items.... right up their with the best of my mods!! They even look good!!! lol!!

For those that will be lifting the engine, make sure you loosen the trans mounts bolts to allow for extra movement. Otherwise you might be putting extra stress on the trans you don't need to.

first trackday last saturday with these on and WOOOOOWWW!! the difference is night and day on the track... the whole drivetrain just feels more connected and engine movement is down to nothing, no more contact with the hood under extreme conditions, the motor isnt thrashing around in the engine bay creating a "bucking" feel under high grip- wheelspin situations..... This is imo an essential mod for a track or fast road driven z4m....

The competition units were the exact right choice for this car/ powerout imo.... after a good workout i no longer detect the vibrations or resonance.... the drivetrain feel is night and day!!! awesome items!!! ill refresh them with new inserts after 20k miles...

Anyone got a pair if these for sale? Looking to install these while I'm getting the supercharger put in as well, to save on labor/time.

Edit: nevermind. Just ordered on my own for $325 shipped :/

330 6-speed and Z4 3.0si does use the same brace as you guys. Collectively that group should be a bit larger than the E46 M3 market. Also fwiw, I frequently got the 1-2 grind on my own 330 ZHP when I used to own one.

That also means VT should have an easier time finding a donor car too

Talking about syncro problems, I had them within the first 5-7K miles during the first year owned the car, not only 1>2, but 2>3 was the worst. Dealer was great and replaced the transmission with just a comment from me that this was the worst shifting trans I had ever driven. I'm sure they felt the syncro issues during test drive. Flew in a new transmission from Germany and installed within 7 days.

TIP for those who have installed stiffer engine mounts and experiencing greater NVH. The dealer CAN raise the idle about 150 RPM and get you into a smoother band. I installed the RE stiffer mounts, which did cause greater NVH at idle. At a stoplight, I would push the throttle to get 1,000 RPM and it would smooth out. Tried a local BMW shop who couldn't raise the idle, but Dealer was able to last time I was in. Makes a big difference. Not perfect, needs about another 50-100 RPMs at idle, but make a big difference.

Got these installed and just got back from a test drive.
Like Beedub says.... WOOOOOOOOOWWWW!!!!!!!!!
These mounts are fantastic! (regular mounts)
Absolutely no additional NVH

A much more connected feel to the drivetrain and a BIG improvement with shifting.
Downshifting 3rd to 2nd is like a dream come true
I can't believe how silky smooth it is now.

You guys are tempting me. I have not had a problem shifting or with much movement but the car is tracked so this sounds like a somewhat needed improvement esp given that my car is on its 6th year and tracked regularly.

Do these mounts need to be rebuilt every so often?
